Gene Vincent - Biography - AOL Music
Gene Vincent only had one really big hit, "Be-Bop-a-Lula," which epitomized rockabilly at its prime in 1956 with its sharp guitar breaks, spare snare drums, fluttering echo, and Vincent's breathless, sexy vocals.
Vincent had his second and final Top Twenty hit in 1957 with "Lotta Lovin'," which reflected his increasingly tamer approach to production and vocals, the wildness and live atmosphere toned down in favor of poppier material, more subdued guitars, and conventional-sounding backup singers.
Vincent never stopped trying to resurrect his career, appearing at a 1969 Toronto rock festival on the same bill as John Lennon, though his medical, drinking, and marital problems were making his life a mess, and diminishing his stage presence as well.

Gene Vincent Craddock was a great rockabilly artist who, with his excellent backup group "The Blue Caps," had a number of hits.
The song was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood on July 1, 1966, during the same session that Gene recorded Jimmy's song, "Love Is a Bird." Jimmy was generally relegated to tenor sax and an occasional backing vocal for the Challenge sessions, while Dash's place was behind his drum set.
Most of the recordings were released on various lp's in Europe, not in the U.S. Thus, Gene's output remained mostly unknown to his American fans during those years.

Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, cut in October 1956, only four months after its predecessor, came about under slightly less favorable circumstances than the Bluejean Bop album.
Vincent's singing also stands out on his dark, moody, ominous rendition of the Delmore Brothers' "Blues Stay Away From Me." And the band runs circles around virtually every other white rock & roll outfit of the period.
Unfortunately, Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps would also be the last time that this version of the band would turn up on record with Vincent -- Gallup soon left again, and in less than three months, every member of the group except drummer Dickie Harrell would be gone.

Mick Farren - Gene Vincent: There's One In Every Town
Mick Farren has long acknowledged Gene Vincent as being one of his all-time idols, and Farren’s debt – not to mention countless others of his generation - is obvious, a point on which Farren is at pains to labour throughout the book.
Vincent’s influence over ensuing generations should not be underestimated either, and as Farren says, ‘without him, there would have been no Jim Morrison, no Sid (Vicious), no Marilyn Manson, and even Elvis would have struggled’.
On the whole, Gene Vincent: There’s One In Every Town is a well balanced piece of work by a genuine enthusiast whose admiration of Vincent is obvious, but who is equally able to recognise the late man’s flaws too.

Rockabilly god Gene Vincent only had one major hit--the epochal "Be-Bop-A-Lula"--but he nevertheless helped to define the genre, with his hiccuping vocals, hard-edged tone, and the backing of his deservedly legendary band the Blue Caps.
Many of Vincent's '50s records are rightly revered today as among the greatest of the period.

Vincent himself died in 1971 at the age of thirty-six from a ruptured stomach ulcer, but bassist Jack Neal -- one of two surviving members of the group, along with drummer Dickie Harrell -- still remembers the early recording sessions vividly.
Neal was playing in country-western acts and in the house band at Virginia radio station WCMS in the mid-Fifties when a young Gene Vincent walked in to audition.
Soon after, Vincent, Neal, Harrell and guitarist Cliff Gallup became known as Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and made the rounds at TV shows like The Perry Como Show and American Bandstand.

"Let's rock again!" Gene Vincent screams in his signature rocker, "Be Bop-A-Lula," and throughout this 20-song document of the first heady year of his career, he and the Blue Caps (surely, the greatest rockabilly band ever) do just that, again and again, rocking with controlled abandon--though just barely controlled.
Gene Vincent is probably one of the most forgotten acts from the '50's, because other than "Be-Bop-A-Lula", you ususally won't hear any of his songs on any oldies stations.
Gene and his Blue Caps are all great musicians, but guitarist Cliff Gallup really steals the show on most of the songs.
