Genealogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As each person lived his or her life, major events were usually documented with a license, permit or report which was stored at a local, regional or national office or archive.
Genealogists locate these records, wherever they are stored, and extract information to discover family relationships and recreate timelines of persons' lives.
Two exceptions are when a genealogist might interview living relatives as to who and where their children and grandchildren are, or tries to locate long-lost relatives who may have already traced their families backward to an ancestor they have in common (which is forward in time from his/her point of view).

Seeking information, seeking connections, seeking meaning: genealogists and family historians. Genealogy, Family ...
In spite of the ongoing nature of this activity, genealogists and family historians have rarely been the subject of study in the information seeking literature and therefore the nature of their information problems have not been explored.
Some consider genealogists to be individuals who conduct genealogical research professionally, on behalf of others and family historians as those who pursue genealogy for themselves on an amateur basis.
Genealogists and family historians themselves viewed their position of family historian as both an important part of their identity and a necessary role in family life (Simko and Peters, 1983).

 WHMC-Columbia--Family History Research at WHMC-C
Genealogists may find love letters between great-grandparents that describe their courtship days or diaries that express political views, religious beliefs, or the adversities experienced by an immigrant.
If these papers do exist, genealogists immediately know that their ancestors had enough forethought and appreciation of history to preserve these documents for future generations.
Genealogists can still use the papers of other families and individuals to see what life was like in the past.

The microfilm of the newspapers, like the census, the local history journal and most local history books are available in the regular collection.

 The New Mexico Genealogical Society
Contrary to Twitchell's belief, genealogists and some historians of New Mexico's colonial period (1598-1821) have focused upon the people, individually and collectively, who were the paisanos or pobladores (everyday people) who settled and resided in the province during this Spanish period.
Critics of genealogists and those historians who do study these people often maintain that they are wasting their time on minutia and unimportant details.
While genealogists investigate ancestry, family history, and descent of persons or families, often to determine the roots of their names or families, historians study people and institutions across time and in relation to other regions and other topics such as government, religion, economy, and society.

It is an indispensable resource for any genealogist attempting to trace their heritage using the county record system of the United States.
For several decades, one of the first books a new (or newly serious) genealogist was likely to purchase has been _Everton's Handybook._ It first appeared in 1947 with only a couple hundred pages of contact information, but it was an almost immediate success and the first nine editions have sold more than 1,000,000 copies.
Again, while the selected countries probably are those for which most American genealogists will want to have contact information, there is actually a growing interest in our pluralistic society regarding Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, and Middle Eastern family research, and well-written chapters on the resources of those comparatively unfamiliar ancestral lands would have been most welcome.

A new guide to family history research in French Canada is automatically of interest to Louisiana genealogists (like me) not only because of the historical similarity between the French colonial systems in Quebec and Louisiana, but also because a large fraction of those expelled by the English from Acadia made their way to Quebec.
To produce such a volume, the publication committee of the French-Canadian/Acadian Genealogists of Wisconsin first considered republishing a collection of articles from its Quarterly, but realized too many of them required major revision and that a number of other topics had not been addressed at all.
This book became a six-year project and the quality of the results of their labors is generally quite high, and the researcher is likely to come back to it again and again, not only for instruction in wringing the most out of the key primary and secondary sources but for ready reference.

deseretnews.com | Fake family trees online may trip up genealogists
But online chat groups of both genealogists and Internet advertisers are buzzing about what the new program could do to genealogical research, and why Harrold is marketing it, even if, as he says, to a small group.
Josh Anderson, an Internet advertiser from Idaho, who also is a genealogist concerned about the product, explains Web hosts can program their sites to display "sponsored links." Advertisers pay search engines to have these appear on screen whenever certain key words such as "genealogy" are part of a search.
Evans, as well as many genealogists and even Harrold himself, urges genealogists to verify carefully all sources of information in genealogy, especially any obtained online from people they do not know.

 DearMYRTLE: MA Legislature Affecting Genealogists
Some legislators are beginning to understand that genealogists represent a large number of their constituents - and are more likely to be voters than the general public.
While Identity Theft and Fraud concerns were stated goals for vital records closing measures in 2002 - despite numerous studies that point to other, much more effective fraud techniques - there was a backroom myth circulating in the legislature about Federal funds being tied to such measures.
The impending crisis of 2002 budget issues made this myth quite appealing - lending credibility without source citations and proof - a problem that genealogists are quite familiar with.
