Genecyst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Genecyst was a popular Sega Genesis/Sega Megadrive emulator for DOS, by Bloodlust Software (the same team that made NESticle).
Genecyst was, again, a DOS based emulator made for Windows 95, 98 and other older processors and machines.
When you start Genecyst, you will be greeted with a small tool bar on the top that looks like it's dripping blood, because its made by Bloodlust Software.

ROMNation Community Forums | Support | Genecyst + Xp?
Genecyst and KGen are DOS emulators, and XP just doesn't run them properly.
I think there are workarounds, but Gens emulates everything Genecyst does (I think), so there's really no reason not to switch over.
You might be able to get genecyst to work with XP by downloading a patch that lets you boot to DOS (rather than using a command prompt within windows).

Genecyst is the fastest genesis emulator there is, and with its Digital fm and PSG sound support, it is the best genesis emulator I have ever seen.
This emulator is coded in 32 bit assembly, and it is almost as good as genecyst.
It is almost as fast as genecyst with Vsynch off now.

 Emulation
Genecyst and KGen are both really good emulators.
Genecyst has a more elaborate mouse driven GUI, and KGen has a simple, nice looking, keyboard GUI.
As far as speed goes, they are both neck and neck, but Genecyst is a tiny bit faster.

The Genecyst allowsyou to choose which buttons to press for A, B, C and START which is useful.
The Genecyst literally takes hardly any time to download, just a few minutes, and the games are quicker.
The Genecyst has everything you need, quality, great features, and it is quick to download and set up.

It is just as fast as Genecyst but has much better sound.
Now there is an excellent gui, 99% of the games run, there is joystick support, real time saving and loading and you can load genecyst save game format.
The best part about this emulator is it is the first emulator to be able to run Warsong, which was one of my favorite games.

Genecyst : It's a Mega Drive for 500k
The Genecyst is the best emulator I have come across because it has a full screen, great sound and image quality, and if you press space you get a menu with everything you need.
I have recently discovered that the games I used to play as a kid are still a lot more fun than any of the new games I have paid a fortune for recently.

Annoyances.org - Genecyst speed under 98SE (Windows 98 Discussion Forum)
I recently removed an unknown virus from my hard drive (it had modified the MBR in some manner which NAV 2000 refused to specify), and in doing so, I was forced to reinstall many drivers, including Yamaha OPL3-SA3 sound system, SYXG50 MIDI synthesizer, IR port controllers, and such.
Now for some reason, my Genecyst program (arguably the best Sega Genesis emulator today) which runs under DOS refuses to run at a decent speed.
In case it's relevant, my system is a Toshiba Satellite 225CDS running at 133MHz with 80 MB RAM and an 10GB HD, 8 of which is usable thanks to the drive limit.

 Virtual PC and RealPC Comparison
When first testing Genecyst under RealPC, I was surprised that it completely failed as soon as I opened the program.
Genecyst features a frames-per-second counter which I used to time the emulators; on the 604e, Virtual PC ran anywhere from 12 FPS to a respectable 20 FPS, while RealPC ran from 4 to 6 FPS and wasn't even close to keeping up with the full speed of a Genesis.
Since both Callus and Genecyst are emulating a system which uses a 68000 processor and Z80 coprocessor, it seems rather strange that Virtual PC's speed varies so widely between the two.

The picture above/right ('Genecyst v0.32 in action') shows some of the features active - they're not really that useful, but are quite interesting - more for use by the programmers.
I think the sound's not quite as good as Genecyst (its a bit more crackly sometimes), but otherwise this is a very good emulator.
It has a GUI, which is menu-driven (differently to Genecyst) and a good keys re-definer, for the joypads.

While the speed is still behind Genecyst and KGen, it's quite a bit faster than both VGen and GenEM, and boasts roughly a 50% compatibility rate.
As it stands, VGen is substantially slower than both KGen and Genecyst, and many games do not work properly or at all.
However, this emulator is still in its early stages, and for a first release, it shows a lot of promise.

Emulators such as Genecyst work really well with near perfect graphics and sound due to the fact that the hardware initially used on the Mega Drive was quite simple compared to todays standards.
I saw a Sega Mega Drive emulator CD-ROM at a open market, I was a bit dubious about buying it, as it looked a bit knock off, but I decided to take a chance because it was only £3.
I ran the CD as soon as I got home, and I was extremely impressed, it has two emulators the genecyst and the Kgen.

Boasting speed close to Genecyst and almost perfect sound, KGen was very warmly received and many favored it over Genecyst, as the compatibility rate (at the time) was greater.
After a wait of nearly two months, Genecyst 0.30 was released, giving Genecyst many of the same features as KGen, while retaining the little goodies (such as Game Genie support and sound capturing) that helped make Genecyst popular.
Both KGen and Genecyst are major milestones in emulation, and in some ways, they're even better than a real Genesis.
