General (pronounced /ˈgeɪnəræl/) is presently the highest rank of the German Army and the Luftwaffe.

The insignia for General remained relatively unchanged from the 19th century and the rank was also common in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

General Friedrich von Bernhardi, The Next War
Neither Germany nor Austria is a rival in this claim, but France, since she has taken up a permanent position on the coast of North Africa, and especially in Tunis, has appropriated a country which would have been the most natural colony for Italy, and has, in point of fact, been largely colonized by Italians.
But for such a union with Germany to be possible, England must have resolved to give a free course to German development side by side with her own, to allow the enlargement of our colonial power, and to offer no political hindrances to our commercial and industrial competition.
The more rapidly, therefore, the attacking general strikes his blow and gains his success, and the more capable his troops, the greater is the superiority which the attack in its nature guarantees.

Germany contends that Arizona authorities long knew that the LaGrand brothers were German nationals, but had wrongly concealed their knowledge until it was accidentally revealed by a prosecutor at the clemency hearing.
Germany also claims that, because the LaGrand brothers were not informed of the possibility of consular notification, Germany suffered additional legal injury by being denied its right to provide diplomatic protection in respect of individual legal injuries suffered by the brothers.
Germany argues that such rules cannot be applied to claims of violations of Article 36 of the Vienna Convention, principally on the ground that the proviso of Article 36(2) requires that violations of the consular notification requirements of Article 36(1) be remedied through the criminal justice systems of States party.

By 1930, unknown to the German financial press, General Electric had similarly gained an effective technical monopoly of the Soviet electrical industry and was soon to penetrate even the remaining bastions in Germany, particularly the Siemens group.
In February General Electric focused on the remaining German electrical giant, Siemens and Halske, and while able to obtain a large block of debentures issued on behalf of the German firm by Dillon, Read of New York, G.E. was not able to gain participation or directors on the Siemens board.
The significance of this General Electric ownership is that A.E.G. and Osram were prominent suppliers of funds for Hitler in his rise to power in Germany in 1933.
