 Aerial Oddities
This strange aircraft was the General Aircraft GAL/56.
It was a tailless experimental glider which arrived at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough in the spring of 1946.
By August 1947 the tests were completed at the R.A.E. and the aircraft was flown to nearby Lasham where General Aircraft's chief test pilot, Robert Kronfeld was to repeat some of the tests for his own benefit.

Tailless and Canard Experimental Aircraft of the RAF
It is this book that allowed me to learn about some of the most interesting experimental aircraft in the RAF history, those in the series of tailless and canard configuration experiments.
Between 1941 and 1944, Miles Aircraft pursued the concept of tandem-wing aircraft, which resulted in development of the M.35 and M.39 Libellula.
Originally there were to be six aircraft of the GAL 56 series, with different wing angles and control configurations, but in the end only three were made and flown, the first in November 1944.

At this point in time, "they were tired of being out-flown by the unexpected MIG-15, and had to some extent tried to rectify things by throwing out all they could from their F-80s, F-84s, F-86s, and F9Fs to get more performance".
The Walter rocket motor weighed a fraction of a normal fighter engine and propelled the aircraft to 30,000 ft in about 3 mins to make combat with the bombers - which was the main objective.
I think the Boomerang did shoot down one Zero but the Boomerang was a close support aircraft as its limitations as an air to air fighter was realized early in its career.

This was later traced to an omission in construction of a foot and half of a fuselage bay (as compared to the wind tunnel model) thereby reducing the tail volume of the rudder and its lever arm.
As the drawings were completed, no change was made to the first 25 aircraft already planned, and the rudder and fin of the aircraft was to grow continuously in subsequent batches until from the original ‘Nine Ack’ configuration emerged the large tail so characteristic of later Wapitis.

Manufactured by Aviat Aircraft of Afton, Wyoming, the latest arc of the line’s fortunes began with the company’s 1996 purchase by Stuart Horn, and has now been redrawn with the debut of the newest model, the S-2C, which was introduced this year.
Since buying Aviat Aircraft in 1996, Horn has installed new management, introduced new methodology (he has a new lawyer and accountant), and perhaps most significantly, got Curtis Pitts to design the S-2C, by “expressing the desire to do new things,” as Eddie Saurenman, company demo pilot and product development specialist put it.

Prior to GPS and the latest generation of inertial systems, when an aircraft was asked to fly a track, it would be on the correct route, with plus or minus up to 5 nautical miles either side, particularly over desertic environments (ie, pacific or atlantic for the greater part!).
With today’s aircraft flying precisely the track requested, it has been discovered (particularly over the atlantic, where the airways are used to pretty much full capacity) that it has generated issues of a new kind.
Aircraft manufacturers all recommend a “firm” contact with the runway, ensuring optimal deployment of the braking systems, so as a passenger, you should not be surprised if you come back to earth with a (small) bump.

Low wing-loading (the ratio of aircraft weight to its wing area) is a vital factor in maneuverability and, combined with the high thrust-to-weight ratio, enables the aircraft to turn tightly without losing airspeed.

Indeed, at first sight the Avenger could well have been a scaled-up Wildcat, but the resemblance had to be confined to external contour owing to its sheer size and r6le, and I hardly expected this torpedo-bomber to offer in the air any of the exhilaration that I had experienced with its smaller stablemate.
The cowl gills and the oil cooler shutters were retained fully open throughout all ground running, the revs being steadily increased to 1800, at which the two-speed supercharger was exercised, the operation of the constant-speed propeller checked and the magnetos tested.
Relative lack of inanoeuvrability was to be expected in an aircraft of its size and purpose, but then, it was not designed to turn with a Zero-Sen but to provide a rock-steady platform for launching a torpedo.
