The Elk River Association was formed in south-central Tennessee in 1806, in the fertile valley region formed by the Elk and Duck Rivers.
As most of the Baptists of middle Tennessee, the churches of the Elk River Association were strongly Calvinistic in theology.
In October of 1939, delegates from Duck River, Mount Zion, Union, Mount Pleasant, Liberty, New Liberty and Ebenezer Associations, and the Pleasant Hill church of Kentucky, met at Garrison Fork Church, Bedford County, Tennessee, and organized the General Association of Baptists.

General Association of General Baptists - a group of Baptists holding the general atonement (that Christ died for all persons), located mostly in the midwestern United States.
Though theologically similar to the General Baptists in England and early America, this body of General Baptists arose in the midwestern United States in the 19th century through the work of Benoni Stinson (1789-1869), a United Baptist minister first in Kentucky and then in Indiana.
In 1870, a convention was called to meet with Harmony church, Gallatin County, Illinois, with the idea of organizing a general association comprised of all the annual General Baptist associations.

The Philadelphia Confession is the Westminster (Presbyterian) Confession (1646) revised in a Baptist sense.
The Northern Baptists constituted, 17 May, 1907, at Washington, a representative body, called the "Northern Baptist Convention", whose object is "to give expression to the sentiment of its constituency upon matters of denominational importance and of general religious and moral interest." Governor Hughes of New York was elected president of the new organization.
The earliest Baptist church in the Dominion of Canada was organized at Horton, Nova Scotia, in 1763, by the Rev. Ebenezer Moulton of New England.

He was passionately opposed to the Roman Catholic Church, which he saw as denying the primacy of the Bible in favour of Papal and Clerical authority, and which he blamed for tyranny and persecution of Protestants in Europe.
Cromwell's feelings of association between Catholicism and persecution were deepened with the Irish Rebellion of 1641.
