General Certificate of Education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GCE was originally introduced in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in 1951, replacing the older School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC).
However GCE is still used in many former British colonies, such as Singapore, Malta, Trinidad and Tobago and some parts of Britain continued to use O levels for some time after 1986.
GCE O Levels are offered across around 100+ countries in the world, and in June 2005, 12 million candidates registered for CIE examinations across the world [1].

General Certificate of Secondary Education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) (in Welsh: Tystysgrif Gyffredin Addysg Uwchradd (TGAU) is the name of a set of British examinations, usually taken by secondary school students at age 14–16 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (but not Scotland, where the equivalent is called Standard Grade).
A different examination is taken for each area of study, but school students are usually obliged to take examinations for certain "core subjects" (English, English literature, Mathematics, Science and sometimes a modern language) along with several optional subjects.
GCSE was introduced for teaching in September 1986, and replaced both the O-level GCE (Ordinary level General Certificate of Education) and the CSE (Certificate of Secondary Education) qualifications, which suffered problems due to the two-tieredness of the system.

QCA | The story of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
GCE O levels and A levels were offered mainly by examining boards with university links.
The GCE examining boards teamed up with groups of CSE boards to run experimental ‘Joint 16+’ examinations based on pairs of O level and CSE syllabuses and leading, as appropriate, to grades on both scales.
Many were surprised when Conservative Education Secretary Sir Keith Joseph finally accepted the new Council’s recommendation that a single system of examinations with a single A to G scale should be introduced and run by groups of O level and CSE boards (four in England and one each in Wales and Northern Ireland).
