The county is named in honor of General John Coffee of Virginia, an influential officer of the Georgia Militia, a hero of the War of 1812, and a prominent frontiersman, renowned for his victory in the region's Indian wars.
As a result of rapid growth in the manufacturing sector, the level of employment in the county is close to the state average and even surpasses employment levels in most other developing counties.
