Electric power, for propulsion and other needs of the board, is produced by combined cycle (COGES type): gas turbines and steam turbines.
Each gas turbine is equipped with a recuperative boiler (recuperation of the heat issuing of the combustion of gas in the turbine) which produces the necessary steam to drive a steam turbine (one for the 2 gas turbines) used to drive 9MW alternator.
The previous version of this gas turbine model, the General Electric LM2500 is available for a long time onboard US Navy ships and other Navies (the LM2500+ has a higher power of 25%).

 GE - Aviation: LM2500
The LM2500 gas generator consists of a 16-stage, 18:1 pressure ratio compressor with seven stages of variable stators and inlet guide vanes; a fully annular combustor with externally mounted fuel nozzles, and a two-stage, air-cooled high- pressure turbine which drives the compressor and the accessory gearbox.
A six-stage, aerodynamically coupled low-pressure power turbine which is driven by the gas generator's high-energy exhaust gas flow drives the output shaft of the marine gas turbine.
The LM2500 marine gas turbine is frequently housed in a high-shock resistant, thermal, acoustic enclosure on a mounting base.

The new LM2500 Cheng cycle for power generation and cogeneration
The advanced general electric (GE) LM2500 Cheng cycle is a recent development to improve the performance of the LM2500 STIG cycle.
Performance of the advanced Cheng cycle using the general electric LM2500 gas turbine indicates that the power output (about 27 MW) and efficiency (between 44 and 45%) remain fairly constant regardless of a high ambient temperature.
In addition to power generation, the advanced Cheng cycle is particularly attractive for cogeneration due to its flexible use of excess steam in the combustion chamber.

Makin Island will be the U.S. Navy's first amphibious assault ship built with a hybrid propulsion system of LM2500+ gas turbine engines, auxiliary propulsion motors and electric powered auxiliaries.
A commercial development of the General Electric LM2500+ gas turbine (35,000 horsepower) made it conceivable to fit a single gas turbine engine into the LHD at power levels comparable to the steam turbine plant.
Since amphibious-class ships spend a significant portion of their on-station time at lower speeds, the design team added electric drives to LHD-8 for redundancy making an efficient, cost wise solution to the fuel-efficiency of the gas turbine engine.
