Topic: General Intelligence and Security Office (AIVD)

General Intelligence and Security Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Algemene Inlichtingen-en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD), formerly known as the BVD (Binnenlandse Veiligheidsdienst) is the General Intelligence and Security Service of the Netherlands.
The AIVD focuses mostly on domestic non-military threats to Dutch National security, whereas the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) focuses on international threats, specifically military and government-sponsored threats such as espionage.
The latter is technically the same as sourcing intelligence from a foreign intelligence service; this method has not been confirmed, conversely however, Dutch citizens have been extradited to the US on the basis of evidence provided by diplomats.

The defence attorneys argued that their clients, too, were arrested exclusively on the basis of information from a report drawn up by the General Intelligence and Security Office (AIVD), without the addition of the results of an independent criminal investigation coming within the area of responsibility of the Public Prosecution Service (OM).
The defence attorneys relied on the judgments passed in the criminal proceedings regarding "Eik" when the Court judged that the report from the General Intelligence and Security Office (AIVD), did not constitute sufficient grounds for the suspicion and arrest of the four men, which subsequently led to their acquittal.
In addition, the Court points at developments in science and criminal law on the basis of which suspicions that are based on anonymous tip-offs, for instance, are considered to be admissible.

For generations, MI5 operated in the shadows, with the cooperation of newspaper editors and the old D-notice system assuring that the details of its operations were never brought to public view.
