"Blackadder Goes Forth" General Hospital (1989)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
The General asks Blackadder to find a spy in the hospital; one of the patients has a thick German accent and an interest in all things military.
General Hospital's opening scene in the trench was one of the funniest things Blackadder has ever shown to us - Baldrick's unbelievable stupidity is at its worst here.
On the whole - General Hospital is a great episode, and easily the smartest of all the Blackadders, as well as being one of the funniest.

Melchett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Melchett was usually seen stood to the left of Queenie's throne, with Nursie on the right.
The insane General Melchett was something of a popular caricature of First World War generals like Field Marshal Douglas Haig, who have been controversially portrayed by authors such as Alan Clark and John Laffin as sending men to a senseless death, with seemingly no tactics at all.
The General is constantly trying to lift the morale of the men, completely ignorant of the fact that they are too afraid of their impending deaths to have their spirits lifted by a Charlie Chaplin film or a drag act.

A generation of young, educated officers was recruited to lead this force.
Far from enjoying a cushy life behind the trenches, Haig's senior officers died in unprecedented numbers leading their men: 97 generals were killed in action on the Western Front and another 146 were wounded or captured.
Haig certainly did not suffer fools gladly (as his diaries reveal) and he had a generally low opinion of the French generals with whom he was supposed to work.

Their very lives are in the hands of General Melchett, a direct conduit to General Haig, who delivers the plans and orders that dictate their movements.
Melchett is quite mad - a gung-ho, bloodthirsty armchair warrior from a military family - and is assisted by an aide-de-camp, the sycophantic Captain Darling.
The madness of war and of warmongers like Melchett were the real villains here and Blackadder's failed attempts to escape his inevitable fate seemed a realistic response rather than a cowardly one.

For those that know their 20th Century history, WW1 was seen as a complete disaster for all and sundry, especially for the British soldiers in the trenches.
Melchett is a complete buffoon but only Captain Blackadder realises this, everyone else thinks the General knows what he is doing.
No longer did the critics argue this series lacked any respect because come the final few minutes of Episode Six we were treated to the sad demise of all those soldiers fading into time and replaced by the infamous poppy fields that strewn Northern France.

And though the series continues to be as funny as ever, it also manages an honesty about the war — the millions who died needlessly, the ‘mad’ generals, the conditions in the trenches — and it all ends with one of the best, and most memorable scenes ever shown on television.
The plot concerns General Melchett trying to find an artist to design the front cover of the King and Country magazine, in order to raise the morale of the troops.
Melchett’s idea of seduction also falls in the icky category — he wants to cover Georgina in pepper and sneeze all over her.

Naturally, Blackadder spends most of his time trying to get out of the trench es before the insane General Melchett gives him the order to 'climb out of the trenches and walk very slowly towards the enemy'.
Blackadder's attempts to escape are usually opposed by General Melchett, who does not seem to realise the futility of sending men to their certain deaths, and Captain Darling, who does.
The lack of appreciation for their predicament, and general incompetence of George and Baldrick acts as a major hindrance to Blackadder's escape attempts, and generally ruin his experience of the war.
