Marine Diesel Engine, Marine Diesel, Diesel Marine Motor, Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine, Volvo Penta Marine Diesel Engine
General Engine Products (GEP) a subsidiary of Am General Corporation was born out of the need to improve the durability of, and sustain the production of a 6.5L diesel engine for military and commercial use.
General Motors, opting for an Isuzu engine for certain vehicle lines, chose to support the transfer of their 6.5L production knowledge and technology to General Engine Products, Inc. The current home for the 6.5L engine (the Moraine Engine Plant) was scheduled to close in the latter part of the 2000 calendar year.
The General Motors 6.2L and 6.5L diesels were never intended to be high performance diesel engines and therefore would never have been capable of supporting the rigorous marine duty cycles achieved with today’s Optimizer 6500 engines.

Algoma Central Railway Equipment Guide - Diesel Locomotives
In 1950 the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors sent their F7 demonstrator set to Canada, and an F7A and F7B were tested on the Algoma Central.
After the CN rebuilds, it was decided that it was no longer economically feasible to keep rebuilding the GP7's, so the railway acquired GP38-2 units for the passenger trains and by the end of the 1980's, all of the un-rebuilt GP7's had been sold or scrapped, as well as the ACR's two GP9's.
Built by GMDD in 1971, these 3000-hp units were capable of hauling more tons of cargo in a shorter time than the older GP7 and GP9 units, despite a 35-mph speed limit.

 General Motors Electro-Motive Division
General Electric is the largest, overtaking EMD in the mid-1980s, and between them they have built the overwhelming majority of the locomotives in service in North America and a large proportion of those in the rest of the world as well.
In 1930, General Motors, seeing the opportunity to develop the diesel engine purchased the Winton Engine Company, and after checking the Winton Engine Companys books, decided to purchase its chief customer "Electro Motive Company" which was a rail based company.
The story of diesel's conquest of steam is better placed elsewhere, but a combination of many factors weakened steam's position and strengthened that of the diesel locomotive, and by the late 1940s to early 1950s, the majority of American railroads had decided to dieselize.
