America on the Move | Experiments in a “mature” industry
General Motors' EV1 was an attempt to create a zero-emissions electric vehicle (not taking into consideration the emissions from the power plants that produce electricity).
The EV1 was, according to GM, the "first modern-era electric car." Electrics had been popular at the beginning of the twentieth century, but had fallen out of favor.
Although the EV1 had its fans, by 2004, General Motors had called in the leases on the cars, and its attempt to mass market an electric vehicle was over.

The EV1 developed by general motors is a very different car to the types that represent the majority of the vehicles on the road.
Obviously General motors would not advertise that fact and they would not be obliged to say so, but is worth bearing in mind that the weight has to go some where.
General motors have already been developing the EV2 which is refinement of the EV1, which shows more progress still, with reduced weight and higher efficiency.

A more recent development is the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), which uses both an electric motor or motors and a gasoline or diesel engine that charges the batteries in order to extend the car’s range and often to provide additional power.
The motor of an electric car harnesses the battery's electrical energy by converting it to kinetic energy.
In order to go backward, the flow of electricity through the motor is reversed, changing the rotation of the motor and causing the power train to make the wheels rotate in the other direction.

General Motors never offered the EV1 for sale, only for lease, and a few years back they stopped renewing the leases, so the last ones are running out now and the cars will be gone from the road by the end of this year.
This EV1 was one of the original 1997 models (introduced in late 1996) that were refurbished and re-leased after their initial leases ran out; the original lead-acid batteries were replaced by higher-capacity ones, but they left the utility chargers with the cars.

The EV1 was the first purpose-built battery electric vehicle produced by General Motors in the United States and, at the time, was the only electric vehicle in the history of the company to bear the "General Motors" badge.
General Motors position on this was very clear - they spent $500 million trying to produce a workable electric vehicle that could compete and win "heads up" in the marketplace.
General Motors stated reason for the lease-only basis was that, as the modern era's first ground up electric vehicle, the EV-1 could not be expected to maintain it's performance level (or affordability in regard to maintenance) over the long run.

Some vehicles operate on the electric motor, while the vehicle is stopped or running at slow speed, then kick over to the gasoline engine at higher speeds.
In other words, the electric motor is never used until the pickup stops, and the only fuel conservation results from not burning gasoline at stoplights or when idling.
Generally, the battery packs in hybrids are warranted for eight years or between 80,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the manufacturer.
