My fondest memory is seeing the GPO where a good part of the 1916 Easter Rising took place and being in total disbelief that I was actually standing right where the fighting had occurred and where those great men of Irish istory had once stood.
The GPO is not quite 200 years old -- relatively young for Ireland -- but it was the site of the 1916 Easter Rising (you can see and touch the bullet holes in the front facade and pillars).
While outside the post office, be sure to look closely at the building and its column supports, for it's there you can still see the evidence of the 1916 battles that destroyed this monument, marking this event as the birth date of Ireland's achievement of her independance from England.
