Our Gang in Ken's Comedy Corner by Ken Lashway
During these years, Hal Roach tinkered with the format of the series a bit, filming one feature-length film, “General Spanky”, which was something of a flop, and also filming annual musical revues, which were very well received.
Spanky was still around, but more of the plots centered around Alfalfa - his unrequited crush on Darla Hood, his constant harassment by bully Tommy Bond, and his frequently hilarious attempts at singing.
They were revived in the fifties and sixties under the television banner of ’The Little Rascals’ (necessary because MGM retained the rights to the original Our Gang name), and a new generation was treated to the antics of the whole succession of adorable youngsters from the early years.

Spanky and the other kids must stay behind and protect the women, so they form an army and fight a battle against some Yankees.
In the case of Our Gang, their attempt at a feature was unsuccessful, and may well have ended the series, but MGM's Louis B. Mayer wanted to keep them in his lineup, and convinced Roach to continue with shorter, one-reel outings.

General Spanky also features Our Gang stalwart Buckwheat as Spanky’s slave, Ralph Morgan and Irving Pichel as wicked Northerners, and Louise Beavers and simpering Willie Best in demeaning roles.
Generally considered a good comic actor unable to hold his own in a serious role, Kilmer is completely convincing here as the pathetic Holmes, strung out on crack cocaine and hangin’ with some extremely shady homeboys whilst his fame recedes inexorably into the distance.

It soon became one of the most popular of all his series, and aside from Laurel and Hardy, it is the only Roach series that the general public is still familiar with.
The Spanky and Alfalfa shorts were certainly different from the Stymie and Wheezer era - more formulaic with most of the rough edges smoothed out - but they were solidly built, expertly executed and above all still funny and charming.
Spanky made a guest appearance in the Thelma Todd-Zasu Pitts short One Track Minds, while Darla Hood found herself working with Laurel and Hardy in THE BOHEMIAN GIRL and with Charley Chase in Neighborhood House.

Roach, who detested the "professional children" who were common in the films of the day, decided to create young characters who behaved like real children rather than as pint-sized adults.
Spanky (George "Spanky" McFarland); Alfalfa (Carl Switzer); Buckwheat (Bill "Buckwheat" Thomas); Darla (Darla Hood); and the indomitable spotted pooch, Petie, were born.
These were just a few of the better-known actors that made up the Our Gang ensemble, many of whom went on to successful film and television careers (Jackie Cooper and Robert Blake perhaps the most notable).

Perhaps writer-director Robert Shallcross had an idea to make a modern-day version of the "Our Gang" comedies (popularly known today as "The Little Rascals"), but he seems to have overlooked the fact that those films were short subjects.
In fact, when producer Hal Roach attempted to move "Our Gang" into features with the 1936 film "General Spanky," the public resisted the concept and Roach never tried it again.
The schedule may sound hectic, but the movie meanders pointlessly from one anecdote to the next, pausing often to let us watch our heroes stroll down the street or plod through a field.
