 Seminary forging ahead with tower despite opposition
General Theological Seminary has taken the first formal step in its quest for city approval of a new 17-story mixed-use tower to replace its existing four-story academic building on the Ninth Ave.
Seminary officials have said the project is essential for the future of the 180-year-old institution, the oldest Episcopal seminary in the nation.
The seminary needs to replace the leaking four-story Sherrill Hall, built in 1959 on Ninth Ave., and also needs to restore the 19th-century buildings on the seminary grounds, which is known as The Close, between Ninth and 10th Aves.

The General Theological Seminary occupies the entire block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and 20th and 21st Streets in the heart of Chelsea and the Chelsea Historic District.
The seminary's older buildings are not architecturally very distinguished but historically they are the most important landmarks in Chelsea and they are bordered on 20th and 21st Streets by two of the loveliest blocks of townhouses in Chelsea.
The seminary does have a nice chapel tower and attractive gardens that are visible from 20th Street.

In Russian theological academies, there appeared a sign of general theological renaissance and the problem of a theological school, of its radical transformation and reorientation, had high priority on the agenda of the All Russian Church Sobor whose preparation began in the first decade of this century.
Theological interests were beginning to permeate wide strata of Russian society and theology was no longer thought of as dead "seminary scholasticism." There began, in other terms, a slow overcoming of that divorce between "theology" and "piety" which had such disastrous consequences for both.
In 1968 the Seminary celebrated its Thirtieth Anniversary marking its "coming of age." At a solemn academic convocation held at Columbia University, the school was greeted by the Secretary of the American Associationof Theological Schools who welcomed the first Orthodox Theological Seminary into the American academic community.

 General Theological Seminary - New York City
Chartered by the Episcopal Church in 1817, the General Theological Seminary was built with the support of Trinity Church, most notably Vestryman Jacob Sherred, and Clement Clarke Moore, best known for penning "Twas the night before Christmas." Moore offered 60 lots of his rural Chelesa estate on the condition that a seminary be built there.
Hoffman endowed the chair of pastoral theology with $80,000, and on the death of his father, Samuel Yerplanek Hoffman, his mother contributed $125,000 for the building of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd as a memorial to her husband.
Charles Coolidge Haight designed the Gothic, collegiate-style chapel, which was built between 1886-88 as the centerpiece of the seminary.
