The German General Staff had badly under-estimated the size of the overall Soviet army and its ability to draft new troops and were now dismayed by the presence of new forces, including fresh Siberian troops under General Zhukov, and by the onset of a particularly cold winter.
Hitler promoted General Friedrich Paulus, who was in charge of the German forces in the area, to Field Marshal in the vain hope it would deter him from surrendering, because never before had a German Field Marshal surrendered.
In the south, in March Zhukov advanced in the direction of Ternopil, to outflank the German forces along the upper reaches of the southern Bug River.

For example, in the smoke support portion of the deception plan for an assault crossing on the Dnieper in October 1943, smoke generation for the 65th Army was carefully planned and successfully executed simultaneously in thirteen sectors across thirty kilometers of the army front.
General Grechko's part of the deception plan was to portray false concentrations of a tank army and a tank corps, which he decided to place in the Chertov and Kopachynites areas respectively.
At 0900, 15 July, General Hermann Balck, commander of the XXXXVIII Panzer Corps, in a telephone conversation with the First Panzer Army commander, Colonel General Erhaud Raus, summarized the situation, indicating his belief that a Soviet tank corps was in the fighting.

However, by 6 December it became clear that Wehrmacht was too weak to capture Moscow and the attack was put on hold. General Zhukov thus began his counter-attack, employing fresh, well-trained Siberian reserves transfered from the east following the guarantee of neutrality from Japan.
"I had to act ruthlessly. I had to send even my closest generals packing, two army generals, for example & I could only tell these gentlemen, "Get yourself back to Germany as rapidly as you can  but leave the army in my charge. And the army is staying at the front."
From experience we had learned that when Hitler started refusing to do what the generals recommended, things started to go wrong, and this was to be no exception.
