Generalissimo - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A generalissimo is a commissioned officer of the highest rank; the word is often translated as "Supreme Commander" or "Commander in Chief".
The dictator Francisco Franco, Chief of State of the Spanish State, also held the title Generalísimo de los Ejércitos Españoles, or "Generalissimo of the Spanish Armies", a title which expressed his supreme command of the Army, Navy, and Air Force of the Spanish State.

Generalissimo el Busho by Ted Rall
In fact, Rall once again hit controversy-gold, and despite feigning  ignorance, I think he knew exactly where to mine.
Ted Rall's latest, Generalissimo el Busho, flows through brief chronological chapters beginning with an entry dated October 10, 2000 and ending with Rall's "Last Word" on March 2, 2004.
That it leads off pre-election 2000 serves as some warning of the potential for tedious retreading of events already pored over ad nauseum by every newspaper, magazine, and political commentator in existence.

The last book I polished off during my sick-time was Ted Rall's Generalissimo El Busho: Essays and Cartoons on the Bush Years.
Ted's an explosive and insistent voice of opposition to the current state of U.S. foreign and domestic policy, and a voice that should be heard.

His GENERALISSIMO EL BUSHO is the ultimate chronicle of the most polarizing presidency in modern American history, a brilliantly tragicomic week-by-week dissection of the Bush Administration's follies and crimes as seen by America's most courageous editorial cartoonist and political writer.
Brave, uncompromising and fiercely devoted to traditional American values of freedom and integrity, Ted Rall's GENERALISSIMO EL BUSHO collects the best of his hilarious cartoons and brutally honest essays during the Bush years.

Depicting Bush as a mad general, Rall zeroes in on the disputed 2000 election, the political uses of 9/11, the troubles in Afghanistan, the Iraqi war, and more in a highly partisan collection of humor.

Rall continues, "I drew the empty-eyed, bat-eared Bush in General Pinochet's uniform, festooned with medals, a sash, and a great big hat.
Generalissimo El Busho was born." And indeed Rall's Bush caricature is one of his most inspired drawings, especially as it seems to have gotten more grotesque in subsequent strips; but when Rall tries to make a reasonable comparison between Bush and Pinochet he falls flat.
Like Pinochet, he would soon assume all the trappings of high office--Air Force One, honor guards, the right to interrupt prime-time TV sit-coms--but they wouldn't change his essential inferiority and incompetence." And that's basically all Rall offers by comparison.

The author recounts in the preface how he stumbled upon the vision of George Bush as “Generalissimo el Busho” soon after the 2000 elections by noting his unsettling resemblance to old pictures of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Bush might be the first case in history of a leader who actually grew into, and not out of, a cartoonist’s caricaturization.
Such comics are not intended to make you feel good; but they are more effective in rousing people to react than any of the lengthy essays that make up the bulk of Generalissimo el Busho: Essays and Cartoons on the Bush Years.

Since the 2000 election debacle, he had taken to drawing George W. Bush as a stereotypical Latin American dictator, Generalissimo El Busho.
At a time when everyone had decided it was time to get beyond such old news, he kept drawing his caricature and he kept bringing up the Bush v.
Rall’s complete and utter conviction that he was living under an evil dictatorial regime has given us Generalissimo El Busho, an evil and profoundly stupid figure who has only seemed more accurate as the years pass.

Rall created Generalissimo El Busho, a frenzied, Cubist-like rendering of George W. Bush in a tin-pot dictator's uniform, after the controversial Supreme Court decision awarded Bush the presidency in 2000.
His 2002 book "To Afghanistan and Back" chronicles his harrowing experiences there during the U.S. bombing and afterward – eight of the 40-odd journalists he (mostly) traveled with were killed – not only in graphic-novel form but also in columns written for the Village Voice.

After September 11, 2001, most critics were afraid to criticize Bush.
