Generalitat de Catalunya - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Generalitat of Catalonia descends from the medieval institution which ruled the Principality of Catalonia, within the Crown of Aragon, in the name of the King of Aragon (in a constitutional system some say is the first in Europe (14th century)).
The Generalitat of Catalonia was restored in Spanish Catalonia in 1932, during the Second Spanish Republic with Francesc Macià as president.
The succession of presidents of the Generalitat was maintained in exile from 1939 to 1977, when Josep Tarradellas returned to Catalonia and was recognized as the legitimate president by the Spanish government.

Generalitat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Generalitat (literally 'Generalty') is the name of two regional systems of government of the present Spanish autonomous communities: the one of Catalonia and the other of Land of Valencia.
Generalitat is not the government, but rather the system (just like kingdom is the system of Spain).
The name goes back to the 13th century, to the medieval courts of the ancient principality of Catalonia and the kingdom of Valencia respectively, that were both abolished in 1715 by the Decretos de Nueva Planta, signed by Philip V of Spain.

In Catalonia, opposition to Philip V increased because of the continuous vexations on the part of the King and his Viceroy, Fernández de Velasco, who was also in conflict with the Generalitat because of its defence of the Constitutions of Catalonia.
But England knew that this would mean continuing a war that was no longer in its interests, merely insisted to Madrid through its ambassador Lord Lexington that it was necessary to respect Catalan liberties, adding that the Catalans "could still cut a considerable figure in the world by organising themselves as a commonwealth".
