Generation ship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A generation ship is a hypothetical starship that travels across great distances between stars at a speed much slower than that of light (see interstellar travel).
Generation ships are often found in science fiction stories.
A common theme is that inhabitants of a generation ship have forgotten they are on a ship at all, and believe their ship to be the entire universe.

 Anti-ship missiles
Ships as small as the 3,500-ton Indian Navy Khukri corvette carry a powerful armament of 16 100km-range Kh-35 Uran anti-ship missiles.
Some ships are known to have evaded missiles through the use of decoys, ECM and tactics but only a small number of missiles have been shot down.
The subsonic TASM that could be fired from ships and submarines, had a Harpoon active radar seeker, an ESM system for target detection and four times the range and twice the warhead weight of the Harpoon.

The generation ship could also pick up additional resources via Stepping Stone objects that may be along its route with subcraft, or the world where the ship was launched might send unmanned resupply ships ahead of the main spacecraft.
One way of dealing with this may be to start the ship with only a small seed population confined to one small area of the space ark's artificial habitat, which will then grow and "settle" the rest of the ship's living space in the ensuing the decades or centuries.
A terraforming seed ship, therefore, would have to be built as tough and as long-enduring as the most rugged generation ship, as it might spend a very, very long time running on automatic, given the combination of a decades-long journey and the centuries or more needed to terraform a planet or planet-sized mass.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and J. Bernal wrote about artificial planets and self-contained worlds in the 1920s, as did Olaf Stapledon in his visionary novels, and by the 1940s the generation ship concept had been fully expanded by science fiction writers in the publications of Hugo Gernsback and others.
In 1952 L. Shepherd examined the idea of the generation ship in more technical detail and described a nuclear-propelled million-ton interstellar vessel shaped as an oblate spheroid, which he called a "Noah's Ark".
Perhaps there would be less of a psychological problem for subsequent generations who were born aboard the ship and therefore never knew what life was like on the surface of a planet under open skies.

Cross generation ship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cross generation ship is a variant of a generation ship that takes into account obstacles that slower than light generation ships might have.
The cross generation ship is a concept that attempts to solve these problems by eliminating the idea of colonizing with a single ship.
Since any one of these ships would not be designed to be self-sufficient forever, they are expected to cost less and take less time to design, build, and test than a true generation ship, although a fully self-sufficient generation ship could take part in a cross generation ship fleet.
