Topic: Generation (album)

The Who - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their earlier "mod" albums, which boasted short, aggressive pop songs, Pete Townshend's distinctive power chords, and constant themes of youthful rebellion and romantic confusion, were formative influences on punk rock and power pop.
The studio albums of the sixties chronicle the phases of the band's ventures into several sub-genres of Rock music and their experiments with Modernism.
The release of the album was overshadowed by the death of Keith Moon in his sleep after a prescribed pill overdose.

DPRP : Counting Out Time : Saga - Generation 13
Generation 13 is one of their stronger albums in that it revitalised the band, preparing them for the entry into the new millennium.
Jeremy is an obvious 13-er and the album depicts his inner turmoil and some of the external reasons for it.
Following this (maybe not quite as qualified) album, the band more or less returned to the sound of their early albums, combining it with some of the heavier and darker elements of Generation 13, on the albums Full Circle (1999) and House Of Cards (2001).

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Original Debut Album - Generation X at Epinions.com
You see, Generation X, unlike the other punk bands, couldn't quite make their mind up if they wanted to be a punk band or a pop band.
Like The Clash's debut, Generation X's self titled first album was released in the UK in one version, and in the USA in another format with some songs replaced with non-album material.
The problem Generation X have, is that unless James music is top class, the songs are always going to seem weak, because they cannot rely too heavily on the lyrics, which are of far too much a throwaway nature to hold a mediocre tune.

Their latest release offers yet another roster change (which, believe it or not, changed again before the album's release) with Heil fronting an all new band.
Fuzzy guitars and Heil offering up his best Bart-Millard-meets-Chris-Tomlin impression open "This Generation." The music is so crisp and clean it almost loses any kind of resemblance to real instruments.
The harmonies and melodies also give the album an early 90's rock throwback feel, something that would have worked with a more modern feel had it been given a raw approach to production.

BookPage Nonfiction Review: An Album of Memories: Personal Histories from the Greatest Generation
Brokaw's thesis is simple: The generation of Americans that came of age during World War II was "the greatest generation any society has ever produced." He made his point by telling the stories of nearly 50 survivors of that era, most of whom are now in their late 70s to mid-80s.
But this great generation is losing the battle against time, and the busy NBC anchorman wanted to capture their stories before they disappeared.
The book became a phenomenon, not just because of the surviving generation, but because of the succeeding generation, the baby boomers who grew up in families and communities affected by the sacrifices and heroism of their fathers' and mothers' generation.

Another early favorite, showing Townshend's way with words, was the 1966 single "Substitute", which included the line, "I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth." The 1967 hit single "Pictures Of Lily", a tribute to masturbation, was possibly one of the most accomplished of all European contributions to psychedelic music.
Although the intended album was not released until reconstructed as a radio play for the BBC in 2000, the Who included many of the project's best songs in Who's Next (1971), which would become their most successful album.
The release of the album was overshadowed by the accidental drug overdose death of Keith Moon shortly afterward.

Adrian's Album Reviews : The Who
It must be difficult for later generations to appreciate the impact that this album had back in 1970.
When these albums were originally put together they were intended to be listened to in two distinct parts and each side of the LP would be compiled with a specific concept in mind.
Rather than buy the original album on CD I must admit I am tempted to go for the most complete version of the whole concert (presumably the 25th anniv ed) but I am mindful that I may be dissapointed because of the sentiment that the original compilation hoilds for me.

 TrouserPress.com :: Generation X
Appearing on the London punk scene shortly after the Sex Pistols, Generation X was an extraordinary but ill-fated outfit that issued five tremendous singles, one classic album and some real dross.
With Idol as the band's voice and image and guitarist Bob "Derwood" Andrews providing its rock power, Generation X broke a lot of punk conventions, and were ultimately ostracized by their peers for refusing to be (or even feign being, as many others did) anti-commercial.
Generation X, regardless of the reputational damage Billy Idol may have subsequently caused, is a classic record.

The album had been previously issued on CD in the USA, the subject of an earlier Making Time review, but this is the UK version of the album which does differ slightly.
This is an album with a chequered history that arose from a long-running dispute between the Who and Shel Talmy, the album's producer.
Talmy still owned the My Generation recordings and this prevented their release in the UK although there was a release of the album by Virgin some years back.

The album contains a selection of musical tracks from other albums, arranged and performed by Nobuo Uematsu, "Melodies of Life (Original Japanese Version)" is performed by Emiko Shiratori.
It makes sense as this album covers Final Fantasy VII to Final Fantasy IX, and producing different covers containing different characters from different games would be normal.

The Prodigy : Music for the Jilted Generation - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Pure sonic terrorism, Music for the Jilted Generation employs the same rave energy that charged their debut, Experience, up the charts in Britain, but yokes it to a cause other than massive drug intake.
Compared to their previous work, the sound is grubbier and less reliant on samples; the effect moved the Prodigy away from the American-influenced rave and acid house of the past and toward a uniquely British vision of breakbeat techno that was increasingly allied to the limey invention of drum'n'bass.
If Experience seemed like an excellent fluke, Music for the Jilted Generation is the album that announced the Prodigy were on the charts to stay.

Generation is where they try to show off their talents in Electronica, but it turns out their talents can salso be the worst of their expectations sometimes.
The approximately 60 minute album may appeal to Hip-Hop Instrumental fans, Electronica fans, those who are used to hearing unclassifiable music or those looking for new music but will not appeal to those who expect better than that.
But because they did and this album clearly shows with plenty of variety on your plate and left to waste a bit, the album is a bit on the "good but not as great as we had hoped, and not really as bad as we had hoped, either" section.

I thought it would be interesting to record a whole album in the same vein as these songs, so between August 2003 and February 2004 I got another five tracks together.

The reason is albums like this 1970 release on Spar Records featuring Now Generation, as manufactured a band as you can think of, performing cover versions of Come Together, Little Bit of Soul, Sugar Sugar, Last Train to Clarksville and other top hits of the day.
Designed to appeal to kids who didn't know better, these tunes (with one exception) are as lifeless as can be, and arranged to sound as close to the original hit recordings as possible (subject to the skills of the musicians, I suppose).
The version of "My Bonnie" featured on The Now Generation album is actually a cover (song and style) of the Tony Sheridan hit record from 1961.
