Trauma to the Genitourinary System - My Child Has - Children's Hospital Boston
Trauma of the genitourinary system is defined as injury resulting from physical force, either accidental or inflicted (intentional), to organs such as the kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, internal reproductive organs or external genitalia.
In those patients admitted to the hospital for care of traumatic injury, the kidney is the most commonly injured organ in the genitourinary system, followed by injuries to the external genitalia, bladder/urethra, and ureter.
Injury to the kidney is most commonly of low grade in the form of either a contusion, hematoma (collection of blood under the capsule of the kidney), or a small laceration of the kidney itself.

Overview of Genitourinary Disorders - Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Genitourinary is a word that refers to the urinary and genital organs.
These disorders -- which are largely related to the male anatomy, as well as fetal development -- may involve the penis, urethra or testes.
Genitourinary system disorders in children are often detected by fetal ultrasound prior to birth.

Treatment of Genitourinary Injuries, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Traumatic injuries to the genitourinary tract (kidney, ureters, bladder or genitals) usually result from an external blow (traumatic hit) to the back, side, pelvis and abdomen (stomach area).
Alternatively, unintentional injury to the genitourinary tract may happen during a difficult surgical procedure on an adjacent organ (uterus, major intraabdominal blood vessels or small or large intestine).
Potential symptoms or signs that the genitourinary system was injured are hematuria (blood in the urine), inability to urinate, spinal fractures, lower rib fractures, fractures of the pelvic bone or pain and/or bruising involving the flank (side), groin or scrotum.

NIH Guide: CELL-SPECIFIC DELINEATION OF PROSTATE AND GENITOURINARY DEVELOPMENT
Strategies to be supported include systematic assessment of gene expression in specific cell types in the developing prostate and genitourinary tract; methods to tag individual cell types for purification, analysis, and characterization; tools to manipulate gene expression in vivo in individual cell types; and development of clinically relevant cell lines.
A number of genes critical for the early differentiation of cells in the genitourinary tract have been identified, but the molecular processes and cell interactions that allow for the development of the full cellular complexity of the mature organs are poorly understood.
Elucidating early steps in genitourinary tract development and subsequent steps in determining and differentiating prostate cell lineages is expected to identify genes important in prostate diseases, particularly those associated with abnormal growth, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and other malignancies of the genitourinary tract.

Genitourinary Cancer Program - Department of Urology - Stanford University School of Medicine
The Genitourinary Cancer Program is designed for people who are concerned about cancer risk or are seeking treatment of a genitourinary cancer at any stage.
The program is based on the philosophy that a multidisciplinary approach to the study and management of genitourinary cancer allows significant insight into the mechanisms of disease initiation and progression, and spurs development of innovative and more effective methods of diagnosis and treatment.
The program focuses on the investigation and management of genitourinary cancers: cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidney, testis and genitalia combining clinical expertise from Urology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, and basic developments from Immunology, Biochemistry, Pathology, and Molecular Biology.

 Genitourinary Examination
Genitourinary tests are X-ray studies of the organs of the genitourinary system: the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
Genitourinary tests are performed to look for blockage, injury, or other abnormalities in these organs.
There are several types of genitourinary tests: intravenous urography (also called an intravenous pyelography or IVP), cystography, and voiding cystourethrography (VCU).

Genitourinary Infections and Their Association with Preterm Labor American Family Physician - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Genitourinary tract infections are one cause of preterm delivery.
By adopting a rational approach to the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary infections, family physicians can substantially decrease a patient's risk of preterm delivery.
One mechanism by which microorganisms might cause preterm labor is through ascension from the cervical/vaginal area and replication in the placenta, decidua and membranes.(4) In one study,(5) the amniotic membranes of pregnant Rhesus monkeys were inoculated with group B streptococci (GBS).

To address these issues, the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites Cooperative Agreement Applications through this RFA and a companion Program Announcement (TPA-04-009) for projects that will contribute to an anatomical and gene expression atlas of the developing murine GU tract (Murine Atlas of GU Development, MAGUD).
However, for the kidney and the genitourinary (GU) tract, markers are lacking for several physiologically or anatomically defined cell types, the developmental processes that establish functional domains is not described, and the genesis of organ anatomy at the molecular/cellular level is not understood.
This lack of fundamental description of these organs is a major obstacle to the pursuit of stem cell research and the design of novel therapies: without knowledge of the cell types within an organ, it is impossible to determine whether putative therapies are effective at regenerating them or restoring their functionality.
