Trauma to the Genitourinary System - My Child Has - Children's Hospital Boston
Trauma of the genitourinary system is defined as injury resulting from physical force, either accidental or inflicted (intentional), to organs such as the kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, internal reproductive organs or external genitalia.
Incidents involving a motor vehicle(s) are the most common cause of genitourinary system injury, and are responsible for one-half to two-thirds of all genitourinary system injuries.
In those patients admitted to the hospital for care of traumatic injury, the kidney is the most commonly injured organ in the genitourinary system, followed by injuries to the external genitalia, bladder/urethra, and ureter.

Pediatric urology is the branch of medicine concerned with the urinary tract and with the genital tract of the reproductive system in both genders.
Many genitourinary system diseases in children are present when a child is born.
Because the genitourinary system is so complex, involving many systems in the body, a child with a genitourinary disorder may require a number of specialists to participate in his/her care.

Primary genitourinary infections are usually sexually transmitted; common pathogens include parasites (Trichomonas vaginalis), bacteria (Treponema pallidum, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Haemophilus ducreyi), and viruses (herpes simplex virus, human papillomavirus, human immunodeficiency virus).
Prolonged use of a urinary catheter greatly increases the likelihood of a urinary tract infection.
Genitourinary infections fall into two main categories: (1) primary infections due to sexually transmitted pathogenic microorganisms and (2) infections due to members of the resident flora.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) supplies all organs in the body and consists of an afferent and an efferent system, with long efferents in the vagus (cholinergic) and short postganglionic unmyelinated fibers in the sympathetic system (adrenergic).
The organ systems that most often exhibit prominent clinical autonomic signs and symptoms in diabetes include the ocular pupil, sweat glands, genitourinary system, gastrointestinal tract system, adrenal medullary system, and the cardiovascular system (Table 1).
Involvement of the autonomic nervous system can occur as early as the first year after diagnosis and major manifestations are cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary system dysfunction (28;95).

Specifically, ultrasound has the capability of imaging the genitourinary system as early as the first trimester with the endovaginal examination; however improved anatomical detail is obtained with transabdominal ultrasound after eighteen gestational weeks.
Abnormalities of the genitourinary system may also be discovered incidentally or secondarily if another anomaly has been detected during the obstetrical ultrasound evaluation.
The genitourinary system consists of two kidneys that excrete urine, the ureters which transport urine to the urinary bladder, and the urethra through which the urine is discharged to the exterior.

 What is the Genitourinary System?
The kidneys make up a filter system for the blood, reabsorbing almost 99% of the fluid into the blood, and sending only two to four pints of waste (urine) into the bladder for storage until it can be disposed of.
The kidneys allow the blood to keep glucose, salts and minerals after cleansing it of poisonous materials which will be passed out in the urinary tract.
We discuss this rather complicated blood purification system.
