		Traditionally, genlocking is necessary to enable seamless, live switching and mixing of the images output by several video cameras.
		If the cameras were not genlocked, or fed the same sync source, you risk seeing a glitch, or some similar image instability, right at the moment of switching the image from one camera to another.

		Genlock is a system which allows the synchronization of two or more video sources, such as cameras.
		The H and V synchronization pulses on a fl burst signal are needed so that all of the video sources begin at the top left corner of the video screen at the same time.
		A standard NTSC video signal is divided into odd and even fields every 1/60th of a second, with the second field interlaced or vertically offset between the scan lines of the first, to produce a complete image every 1/30th of a second.

		Without this, there would be a "glich" in the video whenever the director switched to a camera without genlock.
		I don't know for sure, but I don't think that DV requires genlock to operate between the camera and a switcher.
