It was to have been the second mission to the Salyut 3 space station with presumably military objectives.
Although the spacecraft arrived at the station successfully, cosmonauts Lev Demin and Gennadi Sarafanov were unable to dock because of a fault in the automated docking system.
Without sufficient fuel for prolonged attempts at manual docking, the mission had to be abandoned.

Gennadi Vasiliyevich Sarafanov (Russo: Геннадий Васильевич Сарафанов; (nascido em 1 de Janeiro de 1942 em Sinenkie, falecido em 29 de Setembro de 2005) foi um cosmonauta soviético que vôou na missão Soyuz 15.
Sarafanov foi graduado pela academia da Força Aérea Soviética e mantinha a classificação de coronel.
Ele fez um único vôo espacial antes de ser retirar do programa espacial em 1986 e começar a dar aulas em tecnologia.
