Gennady Ivanovich Yanayev (Янаев, Геннадий Иванович in Russian) (born August 26, 1937), Russian politician and statesman.
Between 1986 and 1990, Yanayev was a secretary, deputy chairman and chairman of the All-Union Central Soviet of Trade Unions (Всесоюзный центральный совет профессиональных союзов (ВЦСПС), or Vsesoyuzny tsentralny sovet professionalnykh soyuzov).
However, Yanayev was eventually freed by the amnesty of the Russian State Duma in 1994.

Gennadiy Yanayev (born 1937) was Vice-President of the Soviet Union and leader of the August Coup of 1991.
Not a prominent member of the party, but one with a reputation for hard work and loyalty, he was Mikhail Gorbachev's choice in 1990 to be vice-president of the Soviet Union, a move widely believed to be an appeasement of conservative elements of the Communist Party displeased with perestroika.
Yanayev as vice-president and assumed the presidency when Gorbachev was falsely declared ill. It was he who went on national television to inform the Soviet people of the coup and he was seen visibly trembling and many thought he was drunk.

In 1980 Yanayev became deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Soviet Associations of Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries.
On 19 Aug 1991, Yanayev and seven other state officials declared the creation of the State Committee for the State of Emergency and claimed that they were taking over the governing of the nation.
The trial of Yanayev and 11 others was postponed in May 1993 amid allegations that it had been compromised by pretrial publicity.
