The Genoa National Fish Hatchery was created on the banks of the Upper Mississippi River to take advantage of the wide variety of fish available from the river, and its mission was to augment bass and bluegill populations in the river.
In addition, the Genoa staff infested 100 yearling lake sturgeon with Hickorynut glochidia, and then placed the lake sturgeon in culture cages in the Mississippi River (Pool 9), and fish were removed after juvenile transformation.
Rearing largemouth and smallmouth bass at the Genoa National Fish Hatchery begins by collecting adult fish from disease-free wild populations in early fall to maintain genetic diversity and to replace aged hatchery broodstock.

Genoa Station #3 (G-3), located on the bank of the Mississippi River about 20 miles south of Dairyland Power Cooperative's La Crosse, Wis., headquarters, was completed in 1969 at a cost of $56 million.
