  Coming of age
It was known as genpuku (see the section below) among samurai in the past.
Genpuku in Japan was a celebration that showed a samurai was considered to be an adult.
They usually changed their name from their birth name to an adult name, changed their hair style and were started to be treated as an adult, for example, by separation from their mother or governess.

From ancient times, the "coming of age" ceremony for boys was called "genpuku" and occurred between the ages of 10 to 16.
(Genpuku literally means "first clothing".) It was customary then for the young men to shave their hair off the top front of their heads, leaving only a ponytail on the back. The young males had to demonstrate their adult strength by lifting a straw and rice pack, which weighed between 130- 140 pounds.
Merchant families during the Edo Period also initiated their sons into adulthood at the age of 18 or 19, at which time the forehead was shaved and they wore a ceremonial costume for the first time.

This is much different than the role of a crossbow in medieval Europe and the role of sword to a knight, here the weapon serves as a symbol of being samurai, which is of greater importance then the katana qua weapon.
Upon reaching the age of thirteen, in a ceremony called Genpuku (元服), a male child was given a wakizashi and an adult name and became a samurai.
This also gave him the right to wear katana though it was usually sealed with strings to prevent accidental drawing of a katana.

When Kenshin had left Kaoru to assist Yamagata Aritomo, Kenji had grown tired of seeing his mother saddened all of the time, so the young boy traveled to Kyoto and demanded to be taught by his father's master, Hiko Seijuurou, in the same style his father used, the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu.
It took Yahiko to beat some sense into the stubborn boy, who had already shown that he was a natural born talent for the sword.
After that, Kenji was handed down the Sakabatou, which Yahiko had, as a late Genpuku present for the boy to continue his father's legacy, and even got a girlfriend who looked almost identical to his mother.

Stripped of his clan robes and banished from Rokugan, he was a directionless ronin, hiding in the northern mountains and skirting minor roads within Rokugan for months until a certain Dragon noble contacted him and arranged for some training.

By the Edo Period (1603-1868), the ceremonial rite of passage grew to encompass both sexes.
