In my opinion Kasparyan, who died in 1995, was the greatest study composer of all time.
Kasparyan was also a strong player; he competed four times in the Final of the USSR Championship and was ten times champion of Armenia.
Kasparyan supplied the raw material for this book, which was then edited by John Roycroft.

Alexander Raetzki - The Complete Studies of Genrikh Kasparyan - 301 pages, paperback, 1997.: 39,95 Euro - endgames - ...
Here, for the first time, is the complete collection of one of the great endgame study composers of all time - Genrikh Kasparyan.
All that remains is for the reader to add his own admiring adjectives to the paeans of praise that Kasparyan's win and draw positions have evoked from their adoring public since he first started composing many decades ago.
A short acquaintance by the reader with what this multi-talented and modes man, an over-the-board master who in his day held his own with Botvinnik, composed, soon exerts its spell and explains why Kasparyan composed studies his entire life.

Endgame studies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Various names were given to these positions (Damiano, for example, called them "subtelties"); the first book which called them "studies" appears to be Chess Studies, an 1851publication by Josef Kling and Bernhard Horwitz, which is sometimes also regarded as the startingpoint for the modern endgame study.
Troitzky and Genrikh Kasparyan, are known primarily for their studies, being littleknown as players.
Not all studies are as simple as the above Réti example; the study to the right is by Kasparyan (first published in MagyarSakkélet, 1962).

In Romanovsky-Kasparyan (Leningrad, 1938), Black worked out a mating combination in the lower right-hand corner of the board, but there was a snag lurking in the lower left-hand corner.
You can almost see Genrikh Kasparian, a famous problem composer, hunched over the board, head clutched in hands, staring intently at the squares h3 and f3 to the exclusion of everything else.
So intent was Kasparyan that he continued with his delusion and announced mate.
