gentamycin antibiotic - Oman - Horizon Medical and Veterinary Necessities LLC - Engormix.com
Gentamycin is an antibiotic belonging to the group of aminoglycosides.
Gentamycin is excreted mainly by the kidneys, resulting in high concentrations of the active compound in the urine.
Gentamycin is an aminoglycoside broad-spectrum antibiotic, active against most gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria. It is used in animals (horses, dogs & cats) for control of uterine infections (metritis), urinary tract infections (cystitis), respiratory tract infections (pneumonia and tracheobronchitis), and soft tissue infections.

A physician's claim that he or she never had a problem with that particular medication, or never monitored its effects before is unacceptable to a judge or jury.
A 55-year-old woman with renal insufficiency was admitted to the hospital for pyelonephritis and treated with gentamycin.
The gentamycin level was not measured for four days and the trough level found upon measurement was 4.6 mg/L. Safe levels are less than 2 mg/L. The patient developed acute renal failure and is on dialysis three times a week.

Regeneration of Cochlear Efferent Nerve Terminals after Gentamycin Damage -- Hennig and Cotanche 18 (9): 3282 -- ...
Cryostat sections of a 4 d AOI gentamycin cochlea immunolabeled with synapsin and counterstained with DAPI were examined to determine the distribution of the blobs within the BP.
In contrast, after gentamycin damage, the terminal breaks apart with the presynaptic membrane containing syntaxin reactivity remaining attached to extruded hair cells, whereas other fragments of the terminal containing synapsin reactivity remain within the BP.
E, Phalloidin reactivity at the inferior edge and 50% of the length from the proximal end of the same BP shown in C, distal to the region damaged by gentamycin, reveals stereocilia arrays and junctional complexes that were not damaged.

Analysis of the results revealed that the antibiotics gentamycin, erythromycin, and bacitracin/novobiocin/polymyxin B all had a substantial effect on the number of S. felis present in the Persian cats’ eyes and the amount of brown tearing.
Chloramphenicol, the macrolides, and the aminoglycosides (streptomycin, gentamycin, neomycin) function in the same manner as tetracycline, by inhibiting protein synthesis (Allen 1998).
Analysis of the results revealed that the gentamycin, erythromycin, and bacitracin/polymyxin B/neomycin combination all had a substantial effect on the amount of brown tearing (Figure 1) as well as the number of bacteria present in all ten Persian cats’ eyes (Figure 2).

Synthetic resin-base, antibiotic compositions containing amino acids - Patent 4191740
In a method aspect, the present invention also provides a method for improving the liberation characteristics of antibiotics from antibiotic-containing synthetic resin particles based on polymethacrylates and/or polyacrylates, wherein 0.3 to 5% by weight, based on the amount of polymers, of at least one amino acid is added to the synthetic resin.
In the case of gentamycin, for example, additions of from 1 to 4% by weight, calculated as gentamycin base, have proven to be especially useful.
According to the present invention, by the addition of amino acids, an improved liberation of gentamycin is achieved, particularly from synthetic resins based upon polymethacrylates and/or polyacrylates.

A New Topical Antibiotic Delivery System
When bacterial organisms were determined to be resistant to gentamycin or the oral agent, then a change in antibiotics was made (Table 3).
Of the 12 patients initially started on gentamycin in type I collagen, six remained with this form of topical therapy until all appearance of infection was resolved clinically and the wound areas were 100% re-epithelialized.
Of the six patients to which culture biopsy revealed resistance to gentamycin, three of the patients were started onto Clindamycin impregnated into type I bovine collagen and three patients were started on Vancomycin impregnated into type I bovine collagen.

 R - Rhinotracheitis
It can still be useful to use an anti-bacterial ophthalmic drop but the best recommendation is to use one that will work well against gram positive bacteria, which is gentamycin's weak area.
A triple antibiotic drop with polymyxin and bacitracin may work better than gentamycin in this case.
This is especially likely in a cat that had pneumonia because of the high probability of rhinotracheitis being involved in that, too.

Discovered in the 1940s, these antibiotics -- which include streptomycin, gentamycin, neomycin and others -- are the most widely-used antibiotics in the world.
In an article published in the July 1997 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Schacht published the results of experiments showing that iron chelators did protect guinea pigs from gentamycin's ototoxic effects.
While the guinea pigs receiving gentamycin alone experienced significant hearing loss with complete loss of hair cells in certain areas of the cochlea, animals receiving some combination of iron chelators and antioxidant therapy did much better.

This study compared the lubrication of urethral catheters with 0.1% gentamycin cream and 2% lidocaine jelly in relation to the quantitative results of the urine culture and incidence of symptomatic urinary tract infection and nonsymptomatic bacteriuria in patients who undergo clean intermittent catheterization.
Group A patients were directed to lubricate the urethral catheter with 0.1% gentamycin cream, and group B with 2% lidocaine jelly.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the lubrication of urethral catheters with 0.1% gentamycin cream is not an effective alternative to reduce significant bacteriuria and prevent urinary infection in patients who undergo clean intermittent catheterization.

FEBS Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
It has been demonstrated that high antimicrobial activity (towards bacteria contaminating the tissue) of the gentamycin was not dependent on temperature used (4, 22, and 37 °C).
On the other hand, the increase in temperature caused significant decrease in the tissue susceptibility to extraction of proteins, which was demonstrated by lower concentration of liberated peptides in electrophoregrams.
It may be stated that treatment with gentamycin of the collagen-rich pericardium tissue is the most favorable at the temperature 37 °C, taking into account both the sterilization effect as well as the satisfactory structural properties of the tissue.

The aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamycin appears to restore the deficiency or absence of chloride channel activity caused by stop mutations in the cystic transmembrane conductance regulator (CTCR) seen in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), report researchers in Israel.
Michael Wilschanski and associates at the Cystic Fibrosis Center of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel, conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of CF patients with stop mutations in the CFTR gene or patients carrying the deltaF508 mutation.
The authors say the genetic correction of CFTR mutation through nasal inhalation of gentamycin should translate to a clinical response in symptoms in patients with CF, but more studies are needed.
