Gentianaceae (Genitian Family)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Members of Gentianaceae have opposite leaves attched directly to the stem (sessile).
Calyx and corolla both have 5 (occasionally 4) lobes and the same number of stamens attched to the corolla tube.
On Montara Mountain, Gentianaceae is represented by Centaurium muhlenburgii - (June Centaury).

Gentianaceae so defined upholds an increased morphological heterogeneity and, as the authors indicate, lacks a general characterization, but its monophyly is well supported by DNA data and potentially by some cryptic phytochemical features.
Since GiIg (1895), the classification of Gentianaceae has been somewhat overlooked, and revision of the classification was "a work waiting to be done." Phylogenetic relationships inferred from two plastid fragments, the trnL(UAA) intron and matK gene, were used as the backbone of the new classification.
Although the secoiridoids are found in almost all members of Gentianaceae studied, thus representing a plesiomorphic state, xanthones, C-glucoxanthone mangiferin, and C-glucoflavones seem not to occur in basal clades of the family, with the latter two limited to the tribe Gentianeae.

 Gentianaceae - Cambridge University Press
The family Gentianaceae is a diverse lineage of over 1500 angiosperm species, including many tropical and temperate trees, shrubs, and herbs with a wide range of floral types and colours.
This volume provides the first comprehensive review of the family, covering phylogeny, classification, biogeography, palynology, phytochemistry and morphology, and also presents the first classification of the entire family to be published for over 100 years, generated using modern molecular- and morphology-based phylogenetic data.
The volume places the Gentianaceae in context with its relatives in the order Gentianales and subclass Asteridae; presents an updated, phylogenetic classification of tribes, subtribes, and genera; investigates the corroborative value of morphological features in phylogenetic diagnoses; and comprehensively summarizes palynology, seed morphology, and phytochemistry.

As here defined, the Gentianaceae are circumscribed in a more narrow sense than Cronquist (1988) but in a broader sense than Hutchinson (Fam.
The Gentianaceae, in a restricted sense, are mainly herbs with basically 5 corolla lobes and stamens on an annualar or more commonly alternating with nectiferous glands, providing a disk is present at all.
Several species of the Gentianaceae are cultivated as ornamentals, with several the favorites of those who maintain rock gardens.

We have assembled new and databased sequences of the trnL intron from Saccifolium as well as 105 Gentianaceae, and to these sequences were added 45 data from outgroup taxa representing other Gentianales and asterid angiosperms.
Clade A is strongly supported as most basal within Gentianaceae, followed by clade B and clades C, D, and E, which each have strong individual support but are poorly resolved with respect to each other.
Saccifolium appears to be the sister group of Gentiana (a mainly boreal genus with representatives in the Andes) and is basally positioned in clade E, which consists of cosmopolitan, temperate-alpine gentians belonging to Gilg’s Gentianinae.

Therefore, a preliminary conclusion is that the species is a biennial at a minumum, probably grows two to seven years before flowering, but that the age of flowering is probably influenced mainly by precipitation.
Therefore, it may be that the chemistry of the granite has been altered and that it may contain a substantial amount of carbonates.
When Swertia albomarginata flowers it sends up a stem which is 8 to 24 inches (2-6 dm) tall and has very thin leaves aranged around the stem in a whorl.
