Loganiaceae - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Loganiaceae are a family of flowering plants, belonging to order Gentianales.
Some classification schemes, notably Takhtajan's, break the Loganiaceae as described here into as many as four families: Strychnaceae, Antoniaceae, Spigeliaceae and Loganiaceae.
Recent DNA studies of the Gentianales have found strong support for Loganiaceae as a monophyletic clade containing 13 genera.

 Gentianales --  Encyclopædia Britannica
The order Gentianales (commonly consisting of the families Loganiaceae, Gentianaceae, Saccifoliaceae, Apocynaceae, and Asclepiadaceae; Retziaceae has been occasionally included in this order) is ancestral to the other orders in the subclass Asteridae.
It is a branched perennial that grows up to 1.5 m (5 feet) tall and has smooth opposite leaves and small greenish white flowers.
The genus was formerly included in the family Loganiaceae of the order Gentianales, but many authorities now put it in the family Buddlejaceae of the order Scrophulariales, a family containing about 10 genera and more than 150 species.

This trnL intron derived phylogeny of the Gentianales represents the most extensive and most evenly sampled study of the group, or any angiosperm order for that matter, to date.
Surprisingly, Gentianaceae is in the basalmost position; it is also the only family (except for tribes Antonieae and Spigelieae in the Strychnaceae) that lack alkaloids.
Most of the traditional families in the Gentianales appear to be monophyletic, except for Strychnaceae and Loganiaceae.

A comparison of the Gentianales was undertaken using the proposed classifications of Benson (1979), Cronquist (1988), Dahlgren (1983), Goldberg (1986), Heywood (1978b), Melchior (1964), Stebbins (1974), Takhtajan (1983), and Thorne (1992).
These classifications were chosen because the authors involved used multifarious data sources and because they encompassed the whole of the dicotyledons.
Consensus is not used here in the cladistic sense (see Barrett et al., 1991); in fact, the reverse may be true, as the authorities chosen here have all used the principle of total evidence.

Boraginaceae have sometimes been associated with Lamiaceae in particular, but the latter have iridoids, opposite leaves, square (not rounded) stems, monosymmetric flowers usually with 4 stamens, endosperm with haustoria and embryo with a long suspensor, and the two are not close.
In general, relationships between Gentianales, Lamiales and Solanales are also unclear (Albach et al.

Utility of the plastid gene matK in reconstruction of the phylogeny of the pair families Apocynaceae - Asclepiadaceae (Dicotyledones, Gentianales) and critical re-examination of palynological characters used to delimit infra-familial sub-units
The family Asclepiadaceae (Dicotyledones, Gentianales) was created by Brown in 1810 by splitting in two the family Apocynaceae of Jussieu established in 1789.
Those characters, used in higher taxonomic delimitation (families, subfamilies and tribes), are here critically reexamined and compared to the molecular phylogeny.

 Botanik online: Asteridae - Solanales

This volume provides the first comprehensive review of the family, covering phylogeny, classification, biogeography, palynology, phytochemistry and morphology, and also presents the first classification of the entire family to be published for over 100 years, generated using modern molecular- and morphology-based phylogenetic data.
The volume places the Gentianaceae in context with its relatives in the order Gentianales and subclass Asteridae; presents an updated, phylogenetic classification of tribes, subtribes, and genera; investigates the corroborative value of morphological features in phylogenetic diagnoses; and comprehensively summarizes palynology, seed morphology, and phytochemistry.
This book deals with four families of the order Gentianales in Australia: Logan iaceae, Gentianaceae, Apocynaceae and Asclepiadaceae.
