		Edo Ivory Netsuke of Samurai Gentoku Escaping On Horse
		Gentoku was a general of the late Han Dynasty.
		When the house of Han was in danger of extinction from the intrigues of usurpers, Gentoku made a pact with allies to organize forces and fight to restore the kingdom to its former glory.

	The Fitzwilliam Museum : Introduction
		Gentoku is the Japanese name for Liu Bei (221-222), who became Emperor of Shu in 221.
		According to the novel, in 207/208 Gentoku travelled with his brother-in-arms, Uncho (Guan Yu) and Yokutoku (Shang Fei), to persuade the Taoist scholar Kômei (Zhuge Liang) to become his adviser.
		Gentoku was often depicted in ukiyo-e prints in another episode from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, showing him with Uncho and Yokutoku swearing an oath of brotherhood while drinking wine in a peach orchard.

		Gentoku became Emperor of China on the fall of Tsao-Tsao in 220.
		Gentoku was a maker of straw sandals and mats ; Kwanyu a seller of bean curd, who spent his spare time in study (Kwanyu studying a book on strategy is the subject of illustration in a fine surimono reproduced at Plate 9 in our quarto edition) ; while Chohi was a " blue-eyed, red-haired butcher."
		Meanwhile his own army makes a flanking movement, joins that of Kwanyu and Gentoku, and attacks Tsao-Tsao from the rear inflicting defeat on him.

		And 1330 was the second year of Gentoku.
		And 50 years prior to the second year of Gentoku was 1281.
		He does have Nichimoku meeting Nikko in 1274 and going to Minobu in 1276, and these dates tend to agree with other records.

	Superb 19th Century Ivory Okimon Netsuke of Three Heros
		The remarkably complex and sumptuously detailed carving is a tribute to the brotherhood of three eminent historical Chinese heroes of the 2nd century A.D. The scene is a faithful rendering of Chinese legendary literature Romance of The Three Kingdom (Sanguo Yanyi).
		In this depiction, the warriors Kanu (Kuan Yu) and Chohi (Cheung Fai) are seated while Gentoku (Lu Pei), first Emperor of the Lesser Han Dynasty, serves them wine, acknowledging his indebtedness as Emperor for the support of his sworn brothers.
		The Three Heros are wearing ornate garments, woven armor and embroidered robes in an animated display of surface decoration, firmly carved and fluently engraved.
