Only consider Gentoo Linux if you have the time to invest, if you do however, the payoffs are worth it.

Gentoo's reputation (in large measure pushed by the people who develop the distribution) is that it's for people who want super crazy optimizations, and it really is suitable only for those who use desktops.
Gentoo takes time, but not as much as people would have you belive, I can setup a debian system in 15 minutes, the count for gentoo (stage3 with binary packages) is about 20 minutes, and its alredy more of a system that I would like to be using.
Gentoo's portage overcomes a huge number of shortcomings of all distributions based on rpm's, and yet this is still just one of it's many strengths.

The Gentoo Release Engineering team proudly announces the release of Gentoo Linux 2006.1, the second release of the year.
Linux 2.6.17 kernels won't boot from the onboard SATA controllers on VIA SP13000 boards (and, reportedly, SP8000 boards too, but I don't own one of those to verify the problem on there).
When I think about where Gentoo was when we turned into a democracy years ago, and where Gentoo is now, I don't see much of a difference on the large scale.
