  GeoTIFF
GeoTIFF represents an effort by over 160 different remote sensing, GIS, cartographic, and surveying related companies and organizations to establish a TIFF based interchange format for georeferenced raster imagery.
GeoTIFF Revision 1.0 Specification: This is the official release version of the GeoTIFF spec.

 GeoTIFF FAQ
The GeoTIFF tags and definitions are considered completely "orthogonal" to the baseline and extended TIFF tag definitions currently supported in TIFF V 6 by Adobe/Aldus.
GeoTIFF merely expands this to involve public domain tags and structures that are interoperable between any GIS.
GeoTIFF has been proposed to the Open GIS Consortium, for example, and other entities are evaluating whether GeoTIFF should be proposed to international or other standards groups.

GeoTIFF - A standard image file format for GIS applications
GeoTIFF format uses numerical codes to describe projection types, coordinate systems, datums, ellipsoids, etc. The projection, datums and ellipsoid codes are derived from the EPSG list compiled by the Petrotechnical Open Software Corporation (POSC), and mechanisms for adding further international projections, datums and ellipsoids has been established.
A GeoTIFF file is a TIFF 6.0 file, and inherits the file structure as described in the corresponding portion of the TIFF spec.
In the GeoTIFF nomenclature, "georeferencing" refers to tying raster space to a model space M, while "geocoding" refers to defining how the model space M assigns coordinates to points on the earth.

USGS - Problems with GeoTIFF on USGS DRG CD-ROM'S
The phrase "the GeoTIFF bug" is now associated with these problems, although this is not quite an accurate description.
By chance, the draft GeoTIFF standard was nearing completion at the same time the USGS was designing the DRG.
Software that implements GeoTIFF is quite rare at this time, and the immediate impact of the problem should therefore be small.

GeoTIFF is a raster image format that is an extension of the TIFF (Tagged-Image File Format) image standard.
GeoTIFF images contain additional information that allow them to be tied to known chart projections.
You should be able to view GeoTIFF images on any image viewing system which is capable of displaying images in GeoTIFF and/or TIFF version 6.0.

 Registering a GeoTIFF Image
GeoTIFF files are similar to regular TIFF files, except that they contain extra information (we call it metadata) that explains how to register this image to a map projection.
I also had to reverse the Y direction of the TIFF image, since most TIFF image writers assume the upper-left corner of the image as the (0,0) point, and IDL wants it to be the lower-left corner of the image.
Fortunately, my GeoTIFF file was a "simple" file with a single tie-point, which identified the origin of the image in a UV coordinate system.

GeoTIFF stores most of its information using a "Key-Code" pairing system; the Major revision number will only be incremented when a substantial addition or modification is made to the list of information Keys, while the Minor Revision number permits incremental augmentation of the list of valid codes.
Geotiff requires one of these to be the semi-major axis (a), and the second to be either the inverse flattening (1/f) or the semi-minor axis (b).

CoastWatch Data Formats and GIS: GeoTIFF
GeoTIFF images are an extended form of TIFF image that contain georeferencing information that allow programs like ArcView to correctly scale and place them on a map.
GeoTIFFs combine image and georeferencing information into a single file, unlike some other georeferenced formats that require a separate header file.
The GeoTIFF images available from CoastWatch are 8-bit images, meaning that the number associated with each pixel is represented by a binary code of eight characters, for example, 01100101.

GeoTIFF offers all the benefits of TIFF plus additional information such as: geographic metadata, hierarchic geodesy model, 64 bit precision support, transformation matrix support, public entabulation of geographic variables, public software library, and is extensible.
GeoTIFF is an informal standard which provides interoperability of projected imagery across many software vendors - and it works.
It would be very worthwhile to generate GeoTIFF from SDTS raster data to avoid duplication.

 GeoTIFF/GDAL OPeNDAP Server Design
The GeoTIFF specification is an extention to the TIFF format, adding tags to describe how pixel locations can be related to some geospatial coordinate system and describing that geospatial coordinate system.
Most GeoTIFF files in use used the first georeferencing form though it is not uncommon for "raw" GeoTIFF files to be provided in the 3rd form with only approximate tiepoints at image corners.
The GDAL data model is fairly closely related to the GeoTIFF data model, and is more completely described in the GDAL Data Model document.

Most GeoTIFF projections should be supported, with the caveat that in order to translate uncommon Projected, and Geographic coordinate systems into OGC WKT it is necessary to have the EPSG.csv files avalable.
Georeferencing from GeoTIFF is supported in the form of one tiepoint and pixel size, a transformation matrix, or a list of GCPs.

The Geotiff (or GeoTIFF) format, is a TIFF image that has special geospatial metadata tags in the header.
Use a program that is designed to read Geotiff images and export geospatial coordinate tags, projection tags, or in some cases Geotiff tags, prior to importing.

 GeoTIFF Format Specification
Geotiff has been designed so that standard map coordinate system definitions can be readily stored in a single registered TIFF tag.
In Geotiff, provision is made to identify earth-referenced coordinate systems (model space M) and to relate M space with R space.
Many uses of Geotiff will be limited to a two-dimensional, horizontal, description of location for which geographic coordinate systems and projected coordinate systems are adequate.

 Landmap - Geotiff File Format
GEOTIFF is an emerging standard for storing georeferenced image data.
Arcview 3.2 was also able to read in the geotiff files exported with PULSAR's own export facility but needed an associated Tiff World File (which can be created in Imagine 8.4).
Problems with software not correctly accepting GeoTIFF files often stemmed from the fact that the TIFF standard only requires a TIFF reader to handle unsigned 8bit image data whereas the LANDMAP DEMs are signed 16bit.

Working with FwTools and GeoTIFF files - FsDeveloper Wiki
The main advantage of using GeoTIFF files is that they contain the placement information of your photo, so that means you don't have to specify all those numbers in the INF file.
This will give you a new GeoTIFF file that can again be used by the resample tool to place your imagery in FS.
So all you have to do before you start editing in your painting program is make sure yo have save the geo information to a GTF file, then you can always put it back later on.
