Geocentric model   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Aristarchus of Samos proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system, but he was clearly in the minority in believing that the Earth was not central.
The geocentric model was usually combined with a spherical Earth by ancient Greek and medieval philosophers.
The geocentric model held sway into the early modern age; from the late 16th century onward it was gradually replaced by the heliocentric model of Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler.

In astronomy, the geocentric model of the universe is the theory that the Earth is at the center of the universe and the Sun and other objects go around it.
The geocentric model held sway into the early modern age; from the late 16th century onward it was gradually replaced by the heliocentric model of Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler.
The geocentric system was still held for many years afterwards, as at the time the Copernican system did not offer better predictions than the geocentric system, and it posed problems for both natural philosophy and scripture.

 Cycles of the Sky
In this model, the planets moved on a small circle called Epicycle that was centered on a larger circle called Deferent.
This geocentric model survived for a long time by reasoning that no observable parallax exists when one looks at the planets against the background of distant stars.
MODEL: A model is the description of natural phenomenon that may be right or wrong, usually constructed out of a hypothesis.

 Geocentric model - Definition, explanation
The geocentric model (in Greek: geo = earth and centron = centre) of the universe is a paradigm which places the Earth at its center.
The geocentric model assumes a spherical Earth; thus it is not the same as the older flat Earth model.
The geocentric model held sway into the early modern age; from the late 16th century onward it was gradually replaced by the heliocentric model of Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler due to the simplicity and predictive accuracy of that newer model.

 Retrograde Motion
This model consisted of a series of concentric spheres, with the Earth at the center (geocentric).
Nevertheless, it was the most accurate model available, and it remained the accepted theory for over 13 centuries, before it was finally replaced by the model of Copernicus.
His model was still based on circular orbits (and therefore still required further refinement), but it was able to achieve superior precision than the Ptolemaic model without the need for epicycles or other complications.

The Geocentric Model of Celestial Objects   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Within the Geocentric model, in order for planetary objects to move around the Earth, changing position in the sky each day or over the course of a year, the Earth had to remain fixed and it could not rotate.
Therefore, in the Geocentric Model, the Moon was depicted in a circular orbit, revolving around Earth.
In the Geocentric Model the stars are all located at the same distance from Earth, fixed on one singular orbital path.

Ironically, the dominant geocentric theory of history, the Ptolemaic system, was devised primarily as a tool to calculate planetary positions in the past and future as an aid for astrological prognostications.
However, the model under scrutiny at the time was the Ptolemaic model, thus this error came from the philosophical musings of the ancient Greeks, not from Copernicus.
Geocentric arguments are predicated upon a rejection of modern relativity theory, based on ignorance of what it teaches.

 Early Models
According to the geocentric (Earth-centered) model, the other planets had to move in strange ways to account for their positions relative to the Earth.
The Ptolemaic, or geocentric, model placed the Earth at the center of the solar system, with the sun and other planets revolving around it.
Both models claimed that the planets and sun were carried around the sky by "spheres," which Brahe felt could not exist, since the comet had crossed several planetary paths.

 Solar System Cosmology
This model generally led to reasonable predictions of planetary positions, but it has several unexplained coincidences: the centers of the epicycles for Mercury and Venus always line up with the position of the Sun, and the lines from the epicycle center to the planet for Mars, Jupiter and Saturn also line up with the Sun.
This kind of unexplained coincidence is often a clue that a better model exists: for example, the equality of the acceleration of gravity for all materials led Einstein to a geometric model for gravity.
In the heliocentric model the 6 angles that just happened to always be the same in the geocentric model are all a reflection of the motion of the Earth around the Sun.

The geocentric model attempted to solve this by adding extra orbits upon orbits that the planets would follow.

A Soaring Overview of A Model in Crisis
This new model of how the physical world really worked was so complete and so well supported by the new laws and examples of their application that the geocentric model, religious explanations, and folk tales purporting to offer an explanation were soon considered quaint relics of history within the halls of science.
Even though Model Revolution had occurred, it would still take a long time for the new paradigm to be widely accepted by laymen, because of the power of the church over their minds.
With this new model of how living things had evolved and why they behaved the way they did in their hands, scientists were no longer dependent on religion for any explanations of the world.

Geocentric theory (elaborated by Claudius Ptolemy ~ 90-170 AD) explains this strange motion with the idea that each planet, in addition to circling the Earth (on a "deferent" circle) also moves around a smaller "epicycle".
Copernicus' heliocentric model didn't need epicycles to explain retrograde planetary motion (but he did use them to make his planets' circular paths a closer match to the ellipical reality).

Beginning around 200 B.C., the combined political and religious power structures of the Western world undertook a systematic oppression not only of the kind of knowledge which did not suit their purpose, such as the heliocentric theory, but also of the very source of knowledge itself, the conceptuality-centered consciousness and its reasoning faculty.

 Historical background
The geocentric model is far more philosophically attractive than the heliocentric model, since in the former model the Earth occupies a privileged position in the Universe.
Ptolemy's second modification to Eudoxas' model was to displace the Earth slightly from the common centre of the deferants.
Ptolemy's model of the Solar System was rescued from the wreck of ancient European civilization by the Roman Catholic Church, which, unfortunately, converted it into a minor article of faith, on the basis of a few references in the Bible which seemed to imply that the Earth is stationary and the Sun is moving (e.g.

The phenomenon of ``retrograde motion'' occurs while Mars is at opposition.
(Note how this model successfully predicts that Mars should be brighter during retrograde motion than at other times due to its smaller distance to the Earth at that time.) Mars orbits on its epicycle at a rate such that a line drawn from the deferent to Mars is always parallel to the Earth-Sun line.
