Datums and Coordinate Conversion Practical Exercise
If the desired input datum is not already displayed in the upper half of the window, select the desired datum using the Datum pull-down list.
If the desired output datum is not already displayed in the lower half of the window, select the desired datum using the Datum pull-down list, just as for the input datum.
DATUM – This line identifies the datum for which the coordinates in the file are defined.

Geodetic Center of the Lower 48 United States of America
The little bronze plaque at that site marks the exact North American Datum, a fixed point from which a sixth of the world's land surface was surveyed.
This triangulation station was selected to be the Datum in 1901 by the Coast and Geodectic Survey, the primary map makers in America at the time.
In 1913, it was adopted as the datum for Canada and Mexico's surveys as well.

Intergovernmental Committee on Survey and Mapping - GDA
The Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA) is a coordinate reference system that best fits the shape of the earth as a whole.
Following a resolution of the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) in 1988, it is being progressively implemented throughout Australia as the preferred datum for all spatial information.
National datums were commonly non-geocentric before satellite based navigation systems were established in the early 1970's.

Map Projections and the conversion of geodetic positions to UTM coordinates
For example, the NAD-27 datum (North American Datum, 1927) is based on the latitude and longitude of Red Falls, Iowa, whereas the WGS-84 (the World Geodetic Systems 1984 datum) is based on measurements made from space, beyond the effects of local variations in gravity.
Each datum embodies its own concept of latitude and longitude, and at any given locality, changing the datum may change a coordinate reading by several hundred metres, as in the case of Sudbury.
Geodetic (geographic) coordinates are given in terms of latitudinal and longitudinal degrees measured relative to the equator and either east or west of the prime meridian running through Greenwich, England, respectively.
