Geoff JohnsWhile 80's nostalgia has been returning to the comic book world in the form of classic cartoon characters, like "G.I Joe" and "Transformers," DC Comics latest set of new release announcements for 2003 seem to have a sort of "welcome back 80's" feel to them, too.
Arguably one of the biggest announcements is the relaunch of "Teen Titans," under the auspice of writer Geoff Johns and now DC exclusive artist Mike McKone, which spins out of the "Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day" special that is also slated for mid-2003.
Some fans might be skeptical, with all the different incarnations of the Titans, teen or not, in recent years and Johns says that he does have a unique perspective to bring to the book, but he can't go into too much detail yet.

Geoff has moved on, picking up the reins of JSA and The Flash.

Johns has written for Marvel (most notably on a long Avengers run), but has done more for DC, on titles like Hawkman, The Flash, JSA (first co-writing with Batman Begins screenwriter David Goyer, then going solo), and Teen Titans, a title he revamped and re-launched in 2003.
Johns also recently reworked Green Lantern, resurrecting classic Silver Age hero Hal Jordan in the miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth, then in a new ongoing series.
While continuing to develop film and television projects, Johns has also served as a DC editorial consultant, helping plot the direction of the DC Universe, which is set to alter radically through Infinite Crisis, a sequel to the classic, drastic 1985 maxi-series Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Geoff Johns has helped mightily to restore order, sanity, and mythos to the core of the DC Universe's super hero figures.
There are so many themes and examples of this degeneration of super-heroes that it would seem that Geoff Johns has positioned himself well to write a meaningful follow up story to the seminal comics crossover event: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Whereas he set the table to write a multi-dimensional meditation on the state of the modern men-in-tights format, he a furious, action-film style mess that reinforces the gratuitous death and mayhem that he seemingly set out to debunk and deflate.

With the exception of the recent "Wizard: The Guide To Comics" sneak peek, Geoff Johns has been unusually quiet about the re-launch of "Teen Titans." Since the series was announced as one of the spin-offs from the now cancelled "Titans" and "Young Justice" series, fans have been clamoring for more information.
Now that Johns has established the classic characters that will be appearing in the series, for at least the first arc and the tone of the stories to expect, a lot of people are probably wondering about the villains.
Johns calls McKone the natural pick and says he couldn't have asked for a better penciller to join him on the series.

Comics Ate My Brain: Marcia Cross vs. Geoff Johns
I've been frustrated with Geoff Johns on The Flash for a while, but I'm not considering dropping the title as much as I am his Teen Titans and JSA.
Johns also writes a passable Wally and manages to keep the rest of the book from being unreadable, so my frustration comes from Johns' overall tone and the direction of the larger plot.
Well, all that set-up about 'the Crisis' that's coming seemed to be Johns trying to get his Crisis 2 or whatever some buzz, so I suspect we'll see more of it.

The star of the book, Courtney Whitmore, is a delightful creation--the kind of joyous young girl character I've been hoping for.
Heck, the whole reason I wanted to do a female Star Spangled Kid in the first place was so that the DCU had a teenage girl hero that WASN'T tied to Batman, Superman or one of the other big guns--a teenage girl who had a legacy of her own to uphold.

But like Brian Bendis before him, Johns rose to the challenge and in a marathon Sunday session, responded to every reader question submitted — a task either rooted in extreme respect for and appreciation of his fans, or absolute insanity.

Review of the Geoff Johns SF novel Teen Titans: A Kid's Game (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.cs.virginia.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
There's a handy potted history intro by the current writer, Geoff Johns, at the front of the book, and an even handier set of profiles of the current crop of characters (including villains) at the back of the book, along with the covers from the original issues.
Johns' story is quite crisp and pleasingly grim and he is ably abetted by the pencils of Mike McKone and Tom Grummett, and the inking talents of Marlo Alquiza and Nelson.
While the artists are no George Pérez (and there's no reason why they should be), they nonetheless have successfully bridged the gap between comic-y artwork and the death-laden grimness that suffuses the plot.
