Geoffrey St. George Shillington Cather (born October 11, 1890 - died July 2, 1916) was born in the Streatham Hill area of south-west London.
He was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 25 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion, The Royal Irish Fusiliers, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

In 1882, when author Willa Cather was nine years-old, her family left their home in Back Creek Valley, Virginia, and moved to Nebraska, near the settler country in Red Cloud where they farmed a homestead.
Cather, often thought of as a chronicler of the pioneer American West, frequently drew on her memories of prairie culture and her own personal experiences.
A S Byatt maintains that Cather's pared down style is to be admired, and while there is indeed much to be admired in her depiction of the early settlers in the Great Plains, the reader always feels distanced from the characters.

In 1883, when Willa was nine years old, the Cather family moved from her birthplace in lush, green rural Virginia to south central Nebraska, where the land was “as naked as the back of your hand.” She records this wrenching experience in her novel, My Antonia.
She was a restless soul who longed for culture and refinement and was afraid of “dying in a cornfield.” After graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1895, she headed for Pittsburgh and then New York for work in journalism.
Geoffrey Chaucer was a remarkable man. He was in the personal service of three kings of England, for whom his duties ranged from foreign missions of a diplomatic nature to those of the controller of customs for the port of London.

Cather was awarded the V.C. for action near Beaumont Hamel during the first days of the Battle of the Somme, the “Big Push.” His unit was assigned a sector just north of the river Ancre.
