Perkins believes he succeeded by building a superior product and selling "a lifestyle" in his catalogs--an appreciation of fishing, bird hunting, and country living.
Perkins, who once was kicked out of school for going fishing, presents himself as a born salesman who worked for various companies before buying Orvis in 1965.
Perkins has traveled extensively, and the descriptions of his trips to fish in China or hunt in India are quite vivid.

Over the next thirty years Perkins built OrvisÆs annual sales to $100 million by revolutionizing the catalog retail industry and reshaping the companyÆs tradition-bound culture.

Perkins, 48, is leaving the BBC for independent production house Tiger Aspect because he's fed up of spending too much time on budgets and not enough on comedy.

It was based around a fictional TV station, and lampooned the cheap production values found in the developing satellite TV industry (malfunctioning equipment, corny links, unprepared announcers, incorrect cameras and so on...).
The series was essentially a series of themed sketches, and while still capable of raising a smile, the show is most noteable for its cast (Helen Atkinson Wood, Angus Deayton & Geoffrey Perkins), who all went on to successful comedy careers.
Geoffrey Perkins in particular became a very successful comedy producer and Head of Comedy for the BBC, while Angus Deayton established himself as a firm favourite thanks to is roles in "One Foot In the Grave", and as presenter of "Have I Got News For You"
