Ranulf Flambard, or Ralph (died September 5, 1128) was Bishop of Durham and a government minister of William Rufus.
He is usually described as the chaplain of Rufus, but he is also called treasurer and his services were chiefly of a fiscal character.
He profited largely by the tyranny of Rufus, farming for the king a large proportion of the ecclesiastical preferments which were illegally kept vacant.

Geoffrey realising Matilda was too controversial to be accepted as heir to the throne, he sent Henry (his son) with a small army.
Geoffrey and the young king, who had resorted to deceit from the beginning of the campaign, pretending to submit, pretending to assume the cross and to be about to go on crusade, now added sacrilege to their crimes, and plundered the rich abbey of St Martial at Limoges to pay their soldiers.
Geoffrey's discontent came to a head in Summer 1186, he went to Paris in August where he began to plot with Philip Augustus; The two became fast friends, and when Geoffrey was killed in tournament Philip was inconsolable and had to be restrained from leaping into Geoffrey's grave.

This private and public epic unfolds through a series of portraits of 16th-century Europe, showing the Catholic Church in all its wisdom, corruption and glory failing to embrace one of its most astonishing sons.
The director, Peter Gill, stages it with great assurance and clarity, with the help of a fine, imposing design of ecclesiastical arches by Alison Chitty, but there is no mistaking the fact that much of the writing has all the dynamism of a school textbook...
Rufus Sewell is a suitably anguished Luther, all charismatic cheekbones and painful belly gripes, and he memorably charts the way in which the character's spiritual despair is transformed into dangerous conviction.
