The data are indexed by state, county, and place FIPS codes.
The data contain information on a wide range of geographic features such as populated places, rivers, mountains, certain buildings, etc. The data provided include geographic coordinates, elevation at the point, population (if applicable), and the FIPS codes for the state and county containing the feature (but not the feature itself).
The system describes the codes and the relationships between different entities, such as the part of relationship between a U.S. state and a county.

The codes associated with the geographic entities Reporting Region, County and Municipality are based upon a two character alphanumeric.
If necessary such codes should be able to stand on their own and be legible by users in other agencies without special translation.
Codes are to be based upon the primary name for the entity.

 The Natural Area Coding System
A Natural Area Code is a set of very short geodetic coordinates to represent an area anywhere on the earth or a three-dimensional region in the universe.
Since The Natural Area Coding System has generated simple NACs for all areas on the earth and three-dimensional regions in the universe and short coordinates for all geodetic points, the system can significantly improve the structure of a geographic or geospatial database and reduce its storage size more than 80%.
They need to specify new codes, cancel old codes, adjust the postal zones, publish postal codes books and postal zones atlases, and force people to change their codes, and to cause the loss of many mails due to the change of the codes.

Although such motion of course dislocates the tunnels from their geographic reference points on the globe, which would be disorienting for a single tunnel, it was useful when comparing tunnel groupings complex enough that the tunnels alone connote geographic structure.
Useful configurations of color and linewidth coding were then exported via VRML by rerunning the pipeline and hardcoding in the color and linewidth values that were found during a previous interactive session.
The combination of color and linewidth coding, interactive navigation, and moving groups away from the central mass to quickly see hidden structure allowed us to confirm that the each individual backbone had a quite reasonable topology with little redundancy.

What is a Geographic Information System?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system for assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying data which contains physical locations (geographic coordinates) of features and information about those features (attribute data).
This glossary is intended to serve the reader who may be unfamiliar with some of the terminology associated with geographic information systems.
These techniques are designed for the elimination of repetition, removal of irrelevancies, and the employment of special coding techniques, such as run-length encoding.

We were able to add the codes Urban/Rural, Urbanized Area/Urban Cluster, and PUMA5, the geographic codes used in the 2000 Public Use MicroSample 5 percent sample files.

Coding schemes are the essential component for the clear understanding and appropriate homogeneous delineating of landscape components.
Numeric coding such as whole numbers are used graphiclly in the GIS analysis process.
Layers of information are often graphically combined using vertical stripes, diagonal stripes, horizontal stripes, (in numerous combinations), but the "best" coding schemes seem to be "Color Codes" because they tend to be the most intelligible when used to delineate complex maps.

ABC codes are also supported by legal practice guidelines that indicate whether the coded care is within the legal scope of practice of more than a dozen practitioner types in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, based on statutes, administrative regulations, and case law.
The resulting 7-character "code + modifier" is used in the same data fields as older medical codes and their modifiers—except that the ABC code and identifier/ modifier can be linked to state-specific legal practice guidelines to help automatically ensure care was in compliance with statutes, administrative regulations, and case law.
ABC codes are supported by (1) practitioner identifiers used as code modifiers that characterize caregivers on a per code basis, (2) RVUs that reflect the financial worth of interventions, and (3) legal practice guidelines that establish the legality of delivered care on a per intervention, per practitioner, and per state basis.

 Geographic Feature Codes
The feature code does NOT mark when it was digitized, what dataset it belongs to, how accurate it is, what it should look like when plotted, or who is responsible for updating it.
MSRM has found this classification scheme useful for GIS, so has extended the scheme to other types of data, such as environmental, forestry, geology, etc. As new features are defined, they are added to the feature database.

Most parties are organized on spatial rather than on functional lines, and a spatial or geographic scheme seems most generally suited for determining the most "intensive" level of party organization.
The degree of party organization includes the geographical coverage or extensiveness of organization as well as the intensiveness of organization, which is measured by the preceding variable, 8.02.
Parties are coded according to what constitutes the modal category of frequency of meetings for the most intensive unit of party organization.

 ERTICO.COM :: GDF - Geographic Data Files
GDF (Geographic Data Files) is a European standard used to describe and transfer road networks and road-related data.
Settlements and named areas (postal codes, elective districts etc) - These are always useful for reference, but for postal code areas, the amount of data and thus the GDF data set will increase rapidly — and thus its price.
A code is created by the system when needed that sends the information, which is then interpreted, used, and discarded by the receiving system.
