island, 1.7 sq mi (4.4 sq km), central Pacific, one of the Line Islands, just south of the equator and c.1,300 mi (2,090 km) S of Honolulu.
Known to British and American mariners, it was claimed in 1856 by the United States along with Howland Island and Baker Island but was annexed by Great Britain in 1889.
American colonists were brought to Jarvis in 1935; the following year the island was placed under the U.S. Dept. of the Interior.

Jarvis Island is an uninhabited 4.5 square kilometer island with no economic activity in the South Pacific Ocean, about one-half of the way from Hawaii to the Cook Islands.
The Millersville settlement on western side of island was occasionally used as a weather station from 1935 until World War II, when it was abandoned; it was reoccupied in 1957 during the International Geophysical Year by scientists who left in 1958.
Public entry is by special-use permit from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service only and is generally restricted to scientists and educators.

Howland Island lies 1650 sea miles to the southwest of Honolulu, and 48 miles north of the equator.
It and Baker Island, which lies about 35 miles to the south and a little east, are located northwest of the Phoenix group, and a 1000 miles west of Jarvis.
On the same cruise of the Liholiho, Jarvis and Baker islands likewise were claimed, and shortly thereafter guano digging operations were begun on them by the American Guano Co., under bonds 1 and 2, dated October 28, 1856.

The terrain of Navassa Island consists mostly of exposed coral and limestone, the island being ringed by vertical white cliffs nine to 15 meters high, but with enough grassland to support goat herds.
