  St Helena - Geology
To fully understand the physical geography of St. Helena, a knowledge of the island's geological structure, lithology and history is essential.
Helena is the deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m.
It is clear that the formation of St Helena took place more than 14 million years ago, which is certainly much older than the age of volcanism on the North Atlantic Ridge and does in fact accord quite well with the linear correlation between age and distance from the ridge given by Wilson.
