Stockholm is the capital and the largest City of Sweden.
The City of Stockholm is administratively a Municipality within Stockholm County, with an inner city population of 743,703, and with 1,823,210 including the suburbs and county.
Stockholm might be most well known for the Nobel Prizes and the prize ceremony held each year, but the city also houses the largest concentration of Universities with research and higher education in Sweden.

In 1270 Stockholm appears in historical documents as a city and in 1289 it was described as the largest-populated city in the Swedish region.
On October 14, 1471 Sweden under Sten Sture with the support of the Stockholm people achieved a dramatic victory over the Danish king Christian I. His grandson Christian II occupied the city in 1518 in vain, but was able to secure the city in 1520.
Stockholm might be best known for the Nobel Prizes and the prize ceremony held each year, but the city also houses the largest concentration of universities with research and higher education in Sweden.

Riddarfjrden, literally the Knight Bay, is a bay of lake Mlaren in central Stockholm.
Stockholm was built in 1250 on an island in the stream where lake Mlaren (from the west) drains into the Baltic Sea (to the east).
It is surrounded by land to the north (Norrmalm) and south (Sdermalm), and by water to the west (Riddarfjrden) and to the east (Stockholms strm).

Another project that is a spin-off of the expedition to study subrecent push moraines in Spitsbergen is an archival study of the glass negative collection of G. De Geer.
Following the use of some pictures on the push moraines published in a 1910 Geological Congress field guide to Spitsbergen (by G. De Geer) it was discovered that a large, but largely unknown collection of negatives existed in the Department of Quaternary Geology and Physical Geography, University of Stockholm, Sweden.
The collection is now stored at the Academy of Sciences in Stockholm and has only been inventoried on a reconaissance basis.
