Westrobothnia, or Västerbotten (literally "Western Bothnia"), is a historical province or landskap in the north of Sweden.
The main part of the province of Westrobothnia which remained within Swedish borders was divided upon the County of Västerbotten and the County of Norrbotten.
During the 20th century the part of the province that lay with in the County of Norrbotten eventually to be seen as a separate traditional province, known as Norbothnia.
Norbothnia was historically a part of the province of Westrobothnia, which stretched across Torne river and in to Finland.
Following the Finnish War in 1809 Westrobothnia was separated into a Swedish and a Finnish part where the main part of the province remained within Swedish borders being divided upon the County of Västerbotten and the County of Norrbotten.
The province of Norbothnia was not recognized as a traditional province until the 20th century and does not have a coat of arms.
Västerbotten County is divided upon the provinces of Westrobothnia, Angermannia and Lapponia.
The main aim of the County Administrative Board is to fullfil the goals set in national politics by the Parliament and the Government, to coordinate the interests of the county, to promote the development of the county, to establish regional goals and safeguard the due process of law in the handling of each case.
The arms for Västerbotten County is a combination of the arms of Westrobothnia, Lapponia and Angermannia.
The majority of emigrants ended up in Minnesota, which has a geography resembling that of their homeland, mixing arable land with forest and lakes.
The geography is dominated by a forested high plain where the soil is mixed with sand and small boulders, making the area less suited for agriculture than the surrounding parts of Sweden.
Traditionally a historical province is representative of a separate country before the unification of Sweden.
