GeoLocation Node   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The GeoLocation node is an new node for VRML, implemented using VRML's EXTERNPROTO facility.
That is, all UTM coordinates in one GeoLocation node are assumed to be contained within one UTM zone.
The GeoLocation node will set your orientation so that, wherever you are, the +Y axis is gravitional up for that local area, -Z points towards the north pole, and +X is east.

CWINS: Indoor Geolocation (NSF)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Geolocation applications supported by these networks will provide a number of innovative and vital technologies for commercial, public safety, and military applications.
In commercial applications for residential and nursing homes environments indoor geolocation technology will provide for tracking the elderly and children who are away from visual supervision, for navigating the blind and other special need people, and for locating in-demand portable equipment in hospitals.
Although the myriad of indoor geolocation applications have already attracted public attention to the extend that it has been addressed in several mass media scientific programs, there has been no serious attempt to develop a scientific basis to evaluate the physical limitation of these systems.

Milford Amateur Radio Club » Blog Archive » Visitor Tracking - Geolocation software   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
In computing, geolocation software is used to deduce the geolocation (geographic location) of the other party, for example on the internet.
Geolocation software is used for example to limit distribution of certain information to people from certain areas.
One simple approach to geolocation is looking at the IP address and determining what country, organization, or user it has been assigned to, and guess the user’s location based on that.

 Geolocation by IP Address
Geolocation by IP address is the technique of determining a user's geographic latitude, longitude and, by inference, city, region and nation by comparing the user's public Internet IP address with known locations of other electronically neighboring servers and routers.
GPS is limited by line-of-sight to the constellation of satellites in Earth's orbit, which severely limits locating systems in cities, due to high buildings, and indoors, due to complete overhead blockage.
Now that we've explained some of the techniques that can be used in geolocating Internet users by their IP addresses, we offer you a chance to try it out.

 GDAL: RFC 4: Geolocation Arrays
It is proposed that GDAL support an additional mechanism for geolocation of imagery based on large arrays of points associating pixels and lines with geolocation coordinates.
This transformer is currently partially implemented, but in a manner that potentially uses a great deal of memory (twice the memory needed for the geolocation arrays), and with still dubious correctness, but once approved this will be fixup up to at least be correct, though likely not efficient for the time being.
Placement of the geolocation data in a special metadata domain means it won't be transferred in default translations.

I was reading this CNN article about geolocation data and found it very intriguing for both the good and evil it can spawn.
Many are now using geolocation data (based on IP address) to determine your approximate whereabouts to tailor search results to your location.
It looks like Google Video is using geolocation to determine what county you live in and then displaying this message: "We're sorry, but this video is not available in your country." if you are in a "disallowed" country.

With respect to the GeoLocation the entry is related to, it would be useful to have an indication of extent, in miles or kilometers.
It is extremely difficult (possibly impossble) to measure accuracy of Internet geolocation at any granularity, but many of the commercial vendors are happy to say that their products have 99% accuracy to country level and 80% accuracy to city level.

Geolocation filtering: www.georgewbush.com blocked during run-up to election
The primary difference between geolocation filtering and other forms of internet content filtering is that geolocation filtering is done by the target website, instead of an external third party (such as the user's Internet Service Provider, or along the national backbone between the user and the target website).
Wired reports that geolocation technology companies claim an accuracy rate of up to 99% when filtering by country and higher than 80% when filtering at the city level.
Geolocation technology is thus not always accurate, leading to situations in which there is both over and under blocking.

Finding Lost Reservoirs: Using AML to Automate Reservoir Geolocation
The hypothesis behind this method is that, for the purpose of geospatial data gathering when geolocation by hand is impractical or impossible, collecting data from a "similar" watershed within close proximity of the dam provides in most cases a reasonable description of the watershed above the dam.
The geolocation program derived the red boundary while the fl boundary was traced on screen over a scanned topographic map in ArcView.
While in extreme cases this may lead to a slight increase in the mean slope of the affected watershed the effect was generally assumed to be insignificant.

 Mosaic geolocation accuracy
This report describes an initial assessment of the absolute geolocation accuracy of the NASDA JERS-1 Amazon mosaic imaged during low-water season, September-December 1995.
4) indicates that users can improve the geolocation accuracy of the mosaic by systematic corrections such as rotation, if accuracies given in Table 5 are insufficient for their applications.
For the five mosaic tiles that had five or more control points, the mosaic adjustment described above was repeated on a tile-by-tile basis to examine within-tile error: each tile was optimally shifted, and the resulting errors relative to maps calculated.

To define the geolocation grid (to determine the latitude and longitude of a general grid point), we first defined the latitude and longitudes of a series of points on the ground track.
Both the calculation of the image co-ordinates of a scan pixel and the image pixel geolocation (next section) make use of a pre-calculated table of the positions of a series of points along the ground track, spaced by 1 image granule (32 image rows, corresponding to approximately 32 km).

This function establishes the relation between the two where the offset gives the index of the data element (0-based) corresponding to the first geolocation element and the increment gives the number of data elements to skip for each geolocation element.
Similarly, if the geolocation dimension has higher resolution than the data dimension, then the increment is negative.

Space and Signals Technologies: geolocation accuracy enhancements   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Geolocation of targets using overhead platforms had been called "as much Art as Science" by workstation operators.
Failure to deal with the inaccuracies found in these variables (or ignoring some of the variables completely) can lead to a reluctant realization that one's geolocation system is flawed or, worse, a false sense of security and a concomitant dependency on target position estimations that are considered to be accurate when they are not.
SandST was asked to take a major role over an extended period in producing algorithms and software for a defense contractor client that would enhance the geolocation by a more precise determination of the variables.
