New Georgia Encyclopedia: Valley and Ridge Geologic Province
The Valley and Ridge is the westernmost physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains, bounded to the east by the Blue Ridge, the south by the Piedmont, and the northwest by the Appalachian Plateau.
The province owes its topography to the erosion of alternating layers of hard and soft sedimentary rock that were folded and faulted during the building of the Appalachians.
geologic division between the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces is precisely limited by the outcrop of the Cartersville and Great Smoky faults that separate sedimentary rocks in the northwest from metamorphic rocks in the southeast.

New Georgia Encyclopedia: Blue Ridge Geologic Province
Blue Ridge province in northeast Georgia is home to spectacular mountain scenery and boasts the highest point in the state, Brasstown Bald, located in Union County.
The Blue Ridge province is bounded on the northwest by the Great Smoky fault, across which lies the Valley and Ridge province, and on the southeast by the Brevard fault zone, across which lies the inner section of the Piedmont province.
The Blue Ridge province is primarily a physiographic designation, and for this reason, many of the rocks making up the western Blue Ridge resemble the oldest rocks of the Valley and Ridge, whereas some rocks of the eastern Blue Ridge resemble those of the Piedmont.

Maryland Geological Survey: A Brief Description of the Geology of Maryland
Maryland is part of six distinct physiographic provinces: (1) the Atlantic Continental Shelf Province, (2) the Coastal Plain Province, (3) the Piedmont Plateau Province, (4) the Blue Ridge Province, (5) the Ridge and Valley Province, and (6) the Appalachian Plateaus Provinces.
The Piedmont Plateau Province is composed of hard, crystalline igneous and metamorphic rocks and extends from the inner edge of the Coastal Plain westward to Catoctin Mountain, the eastern boundary of the Blue Ridge Province.
The rocks of the Blue Ridge Province in western Frederick County are exposed in a large anticlinal fold whose limbs are represented by Catoctin Mountain and South Mountain.

Geologic provinces are defined as time-stratigraphic groups that share common features of age of formation, geologic setting, tectonic history, and lithology.
Based on the geologic map compilation scales, mismatches of some unit contacts across state boundaries, and the positioneal uncertainty of the source digital files relative to the published geologic maps, the spatial accuracy of this compilation is estimated as 1.5 km.

 Physiographic/Geologic Provinces of Virginia
This province lies east of the Allegheny Plateau and west of the Blue Ridge; its western boundary is known as the Allegheny Front and marks an abrupt change from the flat lying rocks of the plateau to the folded/faulted rocks in the valley and ridge.
The geologic province is defined primarily by the rocks underlying it, (coarse grained igneous and metamorphic Grenville basement rocks) than its topography (the eastern part of the geologic province blends in topographically with the piedmont in many places, and appears distinct from the Blue Ridge mountains).
Structurally the Blue Ridge province is a large, eroded anticline overturned to the west (cross section).

Province - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thus a province is a territory or function that a Roman magistrate took control of on behalf of his government.
For instance, a province is a local unit of government in Belgium, Spain and Italy, and a large constituent autonomous area in Canada and Argentina.
In many federations and confederations, the province or state is not clearly subordinate to the national or "central" government.

Stream sediments, which integrate both natural and anthropogenic sources, have a strong positive correlation with groundwater chemistry, geologic provinces, and rock chemistry and a weak positive correlation with past agricultural landuse.
Although spatial correlation is not sufficient to demonstrate cause-and-effect, the spatial statistics favor rock-based arsenic as the dominant source of arsenic in stream sediments and groundwaters.
The distribution of bedrock geology features at the geologic province and lithology group level closely match the areas of elevated arsenic in both groundwater and stream sediments.
