The Geological Society of London is a learned society based in England with the aim of "investigating the mineral structure of the Earth".
It was partly the outcome of a previous club known as the Askesian Society, and among the more prominent founders were William Babington, Humphry Davy and George Bellas Greenough.
As the Society prepares for it's bicentennial celebrations a number of programmes are in hand to raise the profile of the geosciences in Britain and abroad under the auspices of Professor Richard Fortey, the president over that year.

 Henry De la Beche - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the age of twenty-one he joined the Geological Society of London, continuing throughout life to be one of its most active, useful and honoured members.
The establishment, in which were combined the offices of the Geological Survey, the Museum of Practical Geology, The Royal School of Mines and the Mining Record Office, was opened in 1851.
De la Beche published numerous memoirs on English geology in the Transactions of the Geological Society of London, as well as in the Memoirs of the Geological Survey, notably the Report on the Geology of Cornwall, Devon and West Somerset (1839).

Nick’s brilliant and wide-ranging geological studies led to his being awarded the Lyell Fund of the Geological Society of London and a Medal from the University of Liverpool.
For these achievements among others, the Royal Society invited Professor Rast to be Visiting Royal Society Professor in the Graduate School of Geology at the University of Mexico (UNAM), a position which he filled from January to September 1970.

On April 8, 2003, IUGS President Ed de Mulder and the Geological Society of London Publication Secretary, A.J. Fleet, signed a Memorandum of Agreement for a joint publication program.
Some of these works have been concerned with geological standards in stratigraphy, petrology, geomorphology, and tectonics, for example, while others have been overviews of current topics, conference proceedings, and books on regional geology.
Some 30 of these were issued and sold by major publishing houses, and the rest were produced by universities, museums, scientific societies, and government agencies, such as geological surveys.
