The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established by the Province of Canada in 1841 and actually began in 1842, when William Edmond Logan was appointed as director.
The GSC was in the vanguard of mapping and assessing the new lands of Canada.
As the Geological Survey of Canada continues to accept new responsibilities and to develop new areas of expertise, its contribution to the next 150 years of Canada's development should be as important, colorful, and exciting as in the past.

In September of 1841, the Province of Canada legislature passed a resolution that authorized the sum of 1,500 sterling be granted to the monarchy for the estimated expense of performing a geological survey of the province.
In the spring of 1843, Logan established the GSC's headquarters in Montreal.

 Canadian Geothermal Data Collection: Deep permafrost temperatures and thickness of permafrost
Most of these data were acquired by the Geothermal Service of the Earth Physics Branch, EMR Canada (later amalgamated with the Geological Survey of Canada), in cooperation with the exploration industry and the regulatory agencies.
An overview of the history of deep temperature observations in the permafrost regions of northern Canada is followed by a brief discussion on data acquisition and accuracy, the thermal disturbance due to drilling and the determination of permafrost thicknesses.
In northern Canada, research on these topics, and geothermal research in general, was for many years hampered by logistics and the enormous cost of operating a drill-rig in the Arctic.

In 1978, William W. Hutchison was appointed Secretary-General of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), and, with support from the Geological Survey of Canada, the IUGS Secretariat was transferred to the GSC headquarters in Ottawa.
In January, he became Director-General of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in August, as part of a reorganization within Energy, Mines, and Resources Canada in 1981, he was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister and given responsibility for the management of the Earth Sciences Sector of Department.
